Ultraviolet Treatment at 10 m³ per Hour with the UV Water Treatment Unit

The UV Water Treatment Unit is an industrial treatment unit with a digital panel, in which two ultraviolet lamps totalling 130 watts work together inside an AISI 304 stainless steel body. It joins the line through a 1 1/2 inch connection, is rated for 8 bar working pressure, and helps reduce the microbiological load by passing water through ultraviolet light at flow rates up to 10 m³ per hour. The digital panel shows the status and hours of use of each lamp separately, and gives an audible and visual alarm in the event of a fault.

01Problem & Solution

An Invisible Load, an Unnoticed Fault

Problem

Clear Water, a Silent Lamp Failure

Water that has passed through pre-treatment may look clear yet still carry a microbiological load; well water and water standing in a storage tank should be watched particularly closely in this respect. In a unit whose lamps are not monitored, operation carries on without anyone noticing a lamp that has gone out or reached the end of its life, and the water passes into the line without receiving enough UV.

Solution

Two Lamps, Lamp-by-Lamp Monitoring

The UV Water Treatment Unit runs two ultraviolet lamps together in a single stainless steel body. The digital panel shows the status and hours of use of each lamp separately and gives an audible and visual alarm in the event of a fault; treatment takes place at 10 m³ per hour without adding any chemicals to the water.

02Key Features

UV You Can Monitor, a Body That Lasts

The UV Water Treatment Unit brings flow capacity, lamp monitoring and a stainless steel body together in a single unit.

10 m³/hour Flow

Its nominal flow rate is 10 m³ per hour; it works as the final stage on medium-scale plant lines such as factory, hotel and estate main lines.

130 Watt, 2 Lamps

Two ultraviolet lamps with a combined 130 watts work together in the same body, exposing the water to UV along the length of the body.

Lamp-by-Lamp Digital Monitoring

The panel shows the operating status and hours of use of each UV lamp separately; replacement time is followed from the hour counter.

Audible and Visual Alarm

LED lights show when the system is running and when it has a fault; if a fault occurs, the panel gives an audible and visual alarm.

AISI 304 Stainless Steel Body

The body is AISI 304 stainless steel, with an AISI 316 body available as an option. The unit is rated for 8 bar working pressure.

Chemical-Free Treatment

Treatment is carried out with ultraviolet light; no chemicals are added to the water, and no dosing equipment or chemical stock is needed.

05How It Works

How Does the UV Water Treatment Unit Work?

In the UV Water Treatment Unit, treatment is a physical process: ultraviolet light disrupts the structure of microorganisms in the water and renders them inactive. For the light to be effective, the water must be clear, it must not pass through the unit too quickly and the lamps must run at full power; the DWQR’s technical guidance on ultraviolet treatment sets out these conditions in detail.

  1. It Comes from Pre-Treatment

Water that has been clarified by sand, carbon or cartridge filter stages enters the stainless steel body through the 1 1/2 inch inlet.

  2. It Flows Around the Lamps

Inside the body, the water flows around the two lamps, which are protected by quartz sleeves; the lamps do not come into direct contact with the water.

  3. It Meets the Ultraviolet Light

The light from the two lamps, totalling 130 watts, disrupts the structure of microorganisms in the water and renders them inactive; no chemicals are added to the water.

  4. The Panel Monitors the Lamps

The digital panel shows the status and hours of use of each lamp separately, and gives an audible and visual alarm when a lamp fails.

  5. It Goes Out to the Line

Water that has passed through the light goes out to the pipework through the 1 1/2 inch outlet. Because ultraviolet light leaves no lasting effect in the water, the unit is positioned as close as possible to the point of use or the storage tank outlet.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 10 m³/Hour Right for Your Line?

When choosing the UV Water Treatment Unit, consider peak instantaneous flow, water clarity, hardness and installation conditions together.

Peak Instantaneous Flow

The unit is sized for a flow of 10 m³ per hour. Selection should be based on the plant’s peak instantaneous flow, not on average consumption; if the flow is exceeded, the water does not stay in the lamp chamber long enough.

Water Clarity

Turbidity, colour, iron and manganese reduce how well the light passes into the water. A raw water analysis should be carried out and, where needed, a sand, carbon or cartridge filter stage added.

Hardness

In hard water, limescale builds up on the quartz sleeve and the light cannot reach the water. If hardness is high, a softening stage should be planned ahead of the unit.

Installation and Electricity

Plan clearance at the ends of the body for lamp changes, wall space for the panel, a continuous 220 V electricity supply and ventilation; when the power is cut, ultraviolet treatment stops.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Preserve Its Effectiveness

The UV Water Treatment Unit keeps its effectiveness with regular lamp and sleeve maintenance.

  • Lamps lose intensity over time even while they continue to light; when the hours of use on the panel reach 9,000, the lamp should be renewed without waiting for it to go out.
  • If limescale, iron or sediment builds up on the quartz sleeves, the light cannot reach the water. The sleeves should be cleaned regularly; a monthly check is a starting interval that can be extended depending on water quality.
  • Take care not to scratch or break the sleeves during cleaning; check the seals and replace them when needed.
  • Lamp status and alarms on the panel should be watched regularly, and a lamp that triggers an alarm should be replaced without delay. The pre-treatment cartridges should also be checked at the same service.
  • Disconnect the electricity supply before changing lamps or cleaning sleeves; never look at a lit ultraviolet lamp with the naked eye.
  • The body must always run full of water. Water left without flow for a long time can be warmed by the lamps; precautions should be taken against water hammer that may occur in the line.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the UV Water Treatment Unit do?
It passes clear, pre-treated water along a two-lamp ultraviolet chamber, disrupting the structure of microorganisms and rendering them inactive, and helps reduce the microbiological load. It is used on lines up to 10 m³ per hour.
What does the digital panel show?
It shows the operating status and hours of use of each UV lamp separately. LED lights indicate when the system is running and when it has a fault; in the event of a fault, the panel gives an audible and visual alarm.
Is it enough on its own?
No. The UV Water Treatment Unit does not remove sediment, chlorine, hardness, iron or dissolved salts, and the water must be clear for the light to be effective. A sand, carbon or cartridge filter must sit ahead of it, plus a softening stage where the water is hard.
When should the lamps be replaced?
Lamp life is 9,000 hours; in continuous operation this is roughly one year. Even if a lamp is still lit, its UV intensity has fallen, so it should be renewed when the hours of use on the panel are up.
What happens if the flow exceeds 10 m³/hour?
The water cannot stay in the lamp chamber long enough and treatment becomes less effective. If the plant’s peak instantaneous flow is above this figure, a model with a higher flow rate should be chosen or a flow restrictor fitted on the line.
What happens if the power goes off?
Because the lamps run on electricity, no ultraviolet treatment takes place during the outage. Once switched back on, the lamps need a warm-up period to reach full output; on lines where continuity of power matters, an uninterruptible power supply can be considered.
Does the UV Water Treatment Unit come with a warranty?
Yes. The UV Water Treatment Unit carries a 2-year warranty. Misuse is not covered by the warranty.
