Softening resin
Sold by the litre and loaded into the vessel. How much a vessel takes depends on its size, and the volume you need follows from hardness multiplied by daily consumption — the same calculation that sizes the softener itself. Resin is regenerated with brine, so it is not consumed on every cycle; it is consumed slowly, over years.
Mixed-bed resin
Used in deionization vessels after reverse osmosis. It is normally not regenerated on site but replaced, because its life is measured in litres treated at a given feed conductivity. Running mixed-bed resin on raw water instead of RO permeate exhausts it very quickly and is the most expensive mistake in a pure water line.
What shortens resin life
Chlorine attacks the resin structure; iron coats the beads and blocks exchange sites; turbidity fouls the bed. Each of those is a pre-treatment failure showing up downstream. Resin is a consumable and, because its life depends on the water it sees, it sits outside warranty cover.
