Industrial Reverse Osmosis · 10 Membranes

50 m³ of Product Water a Day with the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System

The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System is an industrial reverse osmosis unit with ten 4 inch (4040) membranes that produces 50 m³ of product water a day from 83 m³ of feed water; its standard recovery rate is 60%. A stainless steel vertical-shaft high-pressure pump drives the water onto the membranes at 9–12 bar; the dissolved salts are held back at the membrane and sent to drain through the concentrate line. The unit is built on a powder-coated carbon steel frame and is equipped with flow meters, a product water conductivity meter, pressure gauges and a control panel with a mechanical board.

01Problem & Solution

A Filter Will Not Remove the Dissolved Salt Load

Problem

High TDS and Conductivity

Brackish well water and mains water with a heavy mineral load carry dissolved salts and conductivity. Sand, carbon and softening units remove sediment, chlorine and limescale, but they do not separate dissolved salts from the water. This load can cause deposits in process equipment and differences in quality in production.

Solution

Separation by Membrane

The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System drives water through semi-permeable membranes at high pressure. The water that passes through the membrane forms the product water, while the dissolved salts stay on the concentrate side. It is designed to work with feed water of up to 2,000 ppm TDS.

02Key Features

10 Membranes, One Frame

The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System brings together on a single frame the components needed for steady production at high capacity.

Ten 4040 Membranes

Ten TFC spiral-wound membranes, 4 inches in diameter and 40 inches long, work inside FRP membrane housings. The design is based on ULP (Ultra Low Pressure) membranes.

60% Recovery

Of the 83 m³ of feed water a day, 50 m³ becomes product water. Regulating valves at the pump outlet and on the reject line balance the product and concentrate flows.

Vertical-Shaft High-Pressure Pump

A stainless steel vertical centrifugal pump is selected for the 9–12 bar pressure range the system requires. The pump motor power is 2.2 kW.

Monitoring on the Unit

Product water and reject water flow meters, a product water conductivity meter and pressure gauges let you read the output and the water quality on the unit itself.

Automatic Operation

Automatic solenoid valves and a control panel with a mechanical board run the unit. A low-pressure switch protects the pump by stopping the unit when the inlet pressure is insufficient.

Cartridge Filter and PPRC Lines

The 5 micron cartridge filter at the inlet holds back fine particles that could reach the membranes. The low- and high-pressure lines are built with PPRC pipework, and the frame is powder-coated carbon steel.

05How It Works

How Does the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System Work?

Reverse osmosis is a membrane separation process that drives water through semi-permeable membranes at high pressure; the part that passes through the membrane is called product water (permeate), and the part that does not is called concentrate. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) overview of treatment technologies also notes that pre-treatment is often needed to keep the membranes from fouling and clogging. The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System carries out this process in five steps.

  1. Cartridge Filter and Inlet Check

Water arriving from the pre-treatment first passes through the 5 micron cartridge filter, which clears it of fine particles. A low-pressure switch monitors the inlet pressure; if the pressure is insufficient, the unit does not run.

  2. High-Pressure Pump

The stainless steel vertical-shaft pump raises the water to a working pressure of 9–12 bar and sends it to the membrane housings.

  3. Separation at the Membranes

The water passes through ten 4040 TFC membranes. As the water molecules pass through the membrane, dissolved salts and substances with larger molecules stay on the concentrate side.

  4. Product Water and Concentrate

Of the 83 m³ of feed water a day, 50 m³ is drawn off as product water and the rest goes to drain as concentrate. The flow meters show the two flows, and the conductivity meter shows the quality of the product water.

  5. Delivery to a Tank or the Line

The product water is delivered to a storage tank or to the line where it is used. The solenoid valves and the control panel with a mechanical board start and stop the unit automatically.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 50 m³ a Day Right for Your Site?

Before the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System is chosen, the daily requirement, the raw water analysis, the pre-treatment and the installation conditions should be assessed together.

Daily Water Requirement

The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System produces 50 m³ of product water a day. If the requirement is clearly below or above this, a different capacity step should be considered.

Raw Water Analysis

No selection should be made before the TDS, hardness, iron, silica, SDI and turbidity figures are measured; where values fall outside the limits, the pre-treatment design changes.

Pre-Treatment

The sand unit holds back sediment and turbidity, the carbon unit chlorine and organic load, and the softener hardness, before they reach the membranes. Antiscalant dosing may also be needed where the water carries a scaling risk.

Installation and Drainage

An inlet line able to supply 83 m³ of feed water a day, a drain for the concentrate, a product water tank and the electrical connection should be prepared in advance.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System runs steadily when the pre-treatment and the monitoring figures are checked regularly.

  • The cartridge filter should be checked regularly and replaced when the pressure difference between its inlet and outlet rises.
  • The product water flow and conductivity should be recorded regularly; a fall in flow or a rise in conductivity can point to membrane fouling.
  • When performance falls, the membranes should be cleaned chemically (CIP); a CIP system can be added to the unit as an option.
  • On the pre-treatment side, keep track of the backwash of the sand and carbon units, the renewal of the carbon fill and the softener’s salt tank.
  • The iron, silica, SDI and turbidity limits of the feed water should be maintained, and antiscalant dosed where there is a scaling risk.
  • The regulating valves at the pump outlet and on the reject line are set for the 60% recovery rate; these settings should not be changed without technical knowledge.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System do?
It produces low-conductivity product water by separating the dissolved salts in the water with semi-permeable membranes. With ten 4040 membranes, 50 m³ of product water is obtained from 83 m³ of feed water a day; the standard recovery rate is 60%.
Which pre-treatment is needed ahead of the unit?
Ahead of the reverse osmosis unit we recommend an automatic sand unit, a carbon unit and a water softener. The sand unit holds back sediment, the carbon unit chlorine and organic load, and the softener hardness, protecting the membranes. Antiscalant dosing may also be needed where the water carries a scaling risk.
What is included in the price?
The price shown is for the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System only. The sand, carbon and softening units, the antiscalant dosing system and the optional CIP system are not included in the price.
What should the feed water figures be?
TDS should be within 0–2,000 ppm, inlet pressure 2–5 bar, pH 6–8 and temperature 10–30 °C. Silica should be at most 25 ppm, iron at most 0.05 ppm, turbidity below 1 NTU and SDI below 5.
Is 50 m³ a day achieved under all conditions?
50 m³ of product water a day is the standard figure for the 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System. System performance varies with the feed water quality; temperature, TDS and the cleanliness of the membranes affect the output.
Does the product water need post-treatment?
It may, depending on the intended use. Reverse osmosis can lower the pH of the product water, so in some applications a post-treatment stage such as pH adjustment is added.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. The 50 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System carries a 2-year warranty. The membranes and the cartridge filter are consumables and are therefore outside the warranty; misuse is not covered either.
