Industrial Reverse Osmosis · 4 Membranes · 20 m³/Day

20 m³ of Product Water a Day with the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System

The 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System is an industrial system that brings four 4040 ultra low pressure (ULP) membranes, a vertical-shaft high-pressure pump, a 5 micron cartridge filter and a control panel with a mechanical board together on a powder-coated carbon steel frame. From 40 m³ of feed water a day it produces 20 m³ of product water at 50% recovery. It is designed to work on water with a dissolved solids (TDS) level of up to 2,000 ppm.

01Problem & Solution

A Filter Cannot Hold Back Dissolved Salts

Problem

High TDS and Dissolved Minerals

Sand, carbon and softening stages reduce sediment, chlorine and hardness, but they do not remove the salts dissolved in the water. Water with a heavy dissolved solids load can leave residue and spots on process equipment and can affect product quality and taste profile.

Solution

Separation by Membrane

The 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System forces pre-treated water through semi-permeable membranes at high pressure. Water molecules pass through the membrane, while most of the dissolved salts are separated off to drain with the concentrate stream, giving 20 m³ of low-TDS product water a day.

02Key Features

Four Membranes, One Frame

The 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System comes with the components needed for production ready-assembled on a single frame.

Four 4040 ULP Membranes

Four TFC spiral-wound membranes, 4 inch in diameter and 40 inch long. The system is designed around ultra low pressure (ULP) membranes.

Vertical-Shaft High-Pressure Pump

A stainless steel vertical centrifugal pump supplies the 9–12 bar pressure the membranes need; its motor power is 1.5 kW.

5 Micron Cartridge Filter

The cartridge filter ahead of the pump holds back fine particles that may get through pre-treatment, protecting the pump and the membrane surface.

Flow Meter and Conductivity Meter

Product water and reject water flow meters, pressure gauges and a product water conductivity meter let you monitor output and water quality in real time.

Automatic Valves and Pressure Protection

Automatic solenoid valves manage the inlet line and a low-pressure switch monitors the inlet pressure. Regulating valves on the pump outlet and the reject line balance the product and concentrate flows.

Powder-Coated Carbon Steel Frame

The membranes, pump and panel are brought together on a single powder-coated carbon steel frame, and the low- and high-pressure lines are built with PPRC pipework.

05How It Works

How Does the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System Work?

The 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System is based on a pressure-driven membrane separation process. In its overview of treatment technologies, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines reverse osmosis as the process in which water is passed through semi-permeable membranes under high pressure, with the part that passes through the membrane separated as product water (permeate) and the part that does not as concentrate.

  1. Pre-Treated Water Inlet

Water that has passed through the sand, carbon and softening stages enters the system at 2–5 bar. A solenoid valve opens the inlet and a low-pressure switch monitors the inlet pressure.

  2. Through the Cartridge Filter

Before the pump, the water passes through the 5 micron cartridge filter; fine particles are held back here, protecting the pump and the membranes.

  3. Pressure Boost

The vertical-shaft high-pressure pump raises the water pressure to the 9–12 bar range the membranes need.

  4. Separation in Four Membranes

The pressurised water passes through four 4040 membranes. As the water molecules pass through the membrane, most of the dissolved salts stay at the membrane surface and are carried away in the concentrate stream.

  5. Product Water and Concentrate

The product water passes the flow meter and conductivity meter on its way to the tank, while the concentrate goes to drain through a regulating valve. Standard recovery is 50%: 40 m³ of feed gives 20 m³ of product water.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 20 Tonne Capacity Right for Your Site?

When choosing the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System, the daily requirement, the amount of feed water, the water analysis and the installation conditions should be assessed together.

Daily Product Water Requirement

The system produces 20 m³ of product water a day, an average of roughly 0.83 m³ an hour. A product water tank should be planned for the hours when demand exceeds this figure.

Feed Water Volume

At 50% recovery the system uses 40 m³ of feed water a day; the inlet line and the pre-treatment units should be sized for this flow.

Raw Water Analysis

Feed TDS should not exceed 2,000 ppm, iron 0.05 ppm or silica 25 ppm. Chlorine should be held back at the carbon stage and hardness at the softening stage before they reach the membranes.

Power and Drainage

An electrical connection for the pump and control panel, a drain line for the concentrate and a product water tank should be ready before installation.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

With the right pre-treatment and regular monitoring, the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System runs steadily.

  • The cartridge filter should be checked regularly and replaced when it is dirty or when the pressure difference between the filter inlet and outlet rises.
  • Product water flow and conductivity should be logged regularly; a fall in flow or a rise in conductivity can point to membrane fouling.
  • When output falls, the membranes are restored by chemical cleaning (CIP); a manual or automatic CIP unit can be added as an option.
  • The backwash and regeneration settings of the sand, carbon and softening units should be checked regularly; chlorine must not reach the membranes.
  • Where the water carries a hardness or silica risk, antiscalant dosing should be planned separately; the dosing system is not part of the standard equipment.
  • Feed water temperature should be kept within 10–30 °C, and the system protected against the risk of freezing.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System do?
It forces water through four 4040 membranes at high pressure, separating out most of the dissolved salts and producing 20 m³ of low-TDS product water a day. It is used at sites that need process, production and utility water.
What pre-treatment is needed ahead of the system?
Ahead of the reverse osmosis unit we recommend an automatic sand unit, a carbon unit and a water softener. The sand unit holds back sediment, the carbon unit chlorine and the softener hardness, protecting the membranes. These units are separate products; the price shown covers the reverse osmosis unit only.
How much feed water does it use a day?
Standard recovery is 50%. The system produces 20 m³ of product water from 40 m³ of feed water a day; the remaining 20 m³ goes to drain as concentrate. The figures are given for a feed water TDS of 2,000 ppm.
What feed water conditions does it work with?
Feed water should be within 0–2,000 ppm TDS, 2–5 bar pressure, pH 6–8 and 10–30 °C. Iron should not exceed 0.05 ppm or silica 25 ppm, and turbidity should be below 1 NTU and SDI below 5.
Is antiscalant dosing included in the price?
No. An antiscalant dosing system is not part of the standard equipment; the need for one is determined by the water analysis and planned separately.
Does the 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System need electricity?
Yes. The high-pressure pump, with a 1.5 kW motor, and the control panel with its mechanical board run on electricity. The electrical supply details should be confirmed at the order stage, and a drain line for the concentrate should be ready.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. The 20 Tonne Reverse Osmosis System carries a 2-year warranty. Consumables such as the cartridge filter and membranes are outside warranty cover.
