75 Tonnes of Product Water a Day with the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System

The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System is an industrial reverse osmosis unit that produces 75 m³ of product water a day at a water temperature of 20 °C, using 15 TFC membranes of 4 inch × 40 inch, a vertical-shaft high-pressure pump and an SS304 stainless steel frame. Of the 107.5 m³ of feed water it takes in each day, 70% becomes product water. The system drives the water under high pressure through semi-permeable membranes, separating out dissolved salts and inorganic substances; it is equipped with automatic membrane flushing, low- and high-pressure switches and a control panel.

01Problem & Solution

A Filter Cannot Hold Back Dissolved Salts

Problem

High TDS, Hardness and Dissolved Salts

Well water and mains water can contain dissolved salts, hardness ions and inorganic substances. Sand, carbon and cartridge filters hold back suspended solids, chlorine and odour, but they do not remove the salts dissolved in the water. In process, boiler and production water, this load can lead to scaling, spotting and fluctuating quality in production.

Solution

Membrane Separation at High Pressure

The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System drives the water coming from pre-treatment through semi-permeable membranes at a working pressure of 9–12 bar. Water molecules pass through the membrane to form the product water; dissolved salts and inorganic substances are sent to drain with the concentrate stream.

02Key Features

15 Membranes, a Stainless Body

The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System brings together on a single frame the membranes, pump, protection and measuring equipment needed for high-volume daily production.

15 × 4040 Membranes

Fifteen spiral-wound TFC membranes, 4 inches in diameter and 40 inches long, work inside FRP membrane vessels; the design is based on ULP (ultra low pressure) membranes.

70% Recovery

Of the 107.5 m³ of feed water a day, 75 m³ becomes product water; the remaining 32.5 m³ or so is sent to drain as concentrate.

SS304 Stainless Frame

The frame carrying the membrane array, the pump and the panel is SS304 stainless steel, giving a corrosion-resistant construction in damp plant rooms.

Vertical-Shaft High-Pressure Pump

A vertical centrifugal pump with an SS304 stainless steel body supplies the membranes with a working pressure of 9–12 bar from a 3 kW motor.

Automatic Membrane Flushing

The autoflush valve rinses the membrane surface with water, helping to reduce the build-up of deposits; flushing needs no manual intervention.

Pressure Protection and Monitoring

Low- and high-pressure switches watch the line; flow meters on the product water and reject water lines, pressure gauges and a product water conductivity meter let you follow operation in real time.

05How It Works

How Does the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System Work?

The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System is based on a membrane separation process that drives water under high pressure through semi-permeable membranes. As the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also points out in its overview of treatment technologies, pre-treatment is often needed to keep the membrane from fouling and clogging; water that does not pass through the membrane is separated off as concentrate.

  1. It Passes the Cartridge Filter

Water coming from the sand, carbon and softening stages passes through the 5 micron cartridge filter at the unit’s inlet; fine particles are held back before they reach the membranes.

  2. The Pressure Is Checked

The low-pressure switch watches the inlet line; the feed water pressure should be within 2–5 bar. The high-pressure switch, in turn, monitors the pressure at the pump outlet.

  3. High-Pressure Pump

The vertical-shaft stainless pump raises the water to a working pressure of 9–12 bar and delivers it to the 15-membrane array; a regulating valve at the pump outlet balances the flow.

  4. Separation at the Membrane

Water molecules pass through the semi-permeable membrane to form the product water (permeate); dissolved salts and inorganic substances stay on the feed side of the membrane.

  5. Product Water and Concentrate Separate

The product water passes the flow meter and conductivity meter and goes into the tank; the concentrate stream is sent to drain through the reject line regulating valve. The autoflush valve flushes the membranes automatically.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 75 Tonnes Right for Your Site?

When choosing the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System, the daily water requirement, the raw water analysis, pre-treatment and the installation infrastructure should be assessed together.

Daily Water Requirement

The system produces 75 m³ of product water a day, an average of roughly 3.1 m³ an hour. If instantaneous consumption exceeds this, the product water should be distributed from a storage tank.

Raw Water Analysis

TDS, hardness, iron, silica and SDI figures should be compared with the feed water limits. The system should not be chosen without a detailed water analysis.

Pre-Treatment

Sand, activated carbon and softening stages protect the membranes from suspended solids, chlorine and limescale. Antiscalant dosing should be planned separately.

Power and Drainage

A 380 V, 50 Hz three-phase power line and a drain connection able to carry roughly 32.5 m³ of concentrate a day should be prepared before installation.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

The performance of the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System depends on regular monitoring of the pre-treatment, the cartridge filter and the membranes.

  • The 5 micron cartridge filter should be checked regularly and replaced when it is dirty or when the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet sides of the filter rises markedly.
  • Flow meter, pressure gauge and conductivity readings should be logged regularly; a fall in product flow or a rise in conductivity can point to membrane fouling.
  • Fouled membranes are cleaned by chemical cleaning (CIP); a membrane cleaning unit can be added to the system as an option.
  • Maintenance of the pre-treatment stages should not be neglected; TFC membranes are sensitive to chlorine, so the carbon stage must be renewed on time once it is saturated.
  • The TDS, iron, silica, temperature and pressure of the feed water should be monitored to keep them within the stated limits.
  • If antiscalant dosing is installed, the level in the chemical tank should be checked regularly; the drain line for concentrate and flushing water must always be kept clear.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System do?
It drives pre-treated water under high pressure through 15 × 4040 membranes, separating out dissolved salts and inorganic substances. It produces 75 m³ of product water a day and is designed for applications with a feed water TDS of up to 2,000 ppm.
Are the pre-treatment units included in the price?
No. The price shown is for the reverse osmosis unit only. Ahead of the reverse osmosis unit we recommend an automatic sand unit, a carbon unit and a water softener; an antiscalant dosing system is not included in the price either.
Do you get 75 tonnes a day in all conditions?
The product water flow is calculated at a water temperature of 20 °C and a feed TDS of 2,000 ppm. If the feed TDS is lower, up to 10% more product water can be obtained; system performance varies with feed water quality.
How much concentrate (reject water) does it produce?
The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System works at 70% recovery: of 107.5 m³ of feed water a day, 75 m³ becomes product water and roughly 32.5 m³ goes to drain as concentrate. The drain line should be prepared for this flow.
What are its power requirements?
The system runs on a 380 V, 50 Hz three-phase supply; the motor power of the high-pressure pump is 3 kW. A suitable power line and drain connection must be ready at the installation site.
What difference does the stainless frame make?
The SS304 stainless steel frame resists corrosion in damp plant rooms. The same capacity is also built with a more economical epoxy-painted ST-37 carbon steel frame.
Does the Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System come with a warranty?
Yes. The Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System carries a 2-year warranty; cartridge filters are not covered by the warranty.
