Membranes Cleaned in Place with the Membrane Cleaning Unit

The Membrane Cleaning Unit (CIP) is a manual cleaning unit used to clean the membranes in industrial reverse osmosis systems with a chemical solution, without removing them from the system. A polyethylene chemical tank, a stainless steel pump, PVC piping and an on/off panel are brought together in a single unit on an SS304 stainless steel frame. The unit is offered for use with systems that carry 1 to 15 four-inch membranes and produce 5–75 tonnes of product water a day.

01Problem & Solution

A Fouled Membrane Loses Its Performance

Problem

Build-Up on the Membrane Surface

Over time, limescale and mineral deposits, colloidal particles, organic matter and a layer of biological origin build up on the surface of reverse osmosis membranes. As the build-up grows, less product water is obtained at the same pressure, salt passage increases and the differential pressure across the membrane housings rises. When cleaning is put off, it becomes harder for a standard clean to bring back the original performance.

Solution

Chemical Cleaning in Place, Without Removal

The Membrane Cleaning Unit prepares the cleaning solution in the tank and sends it to the membrane housings with the stainless pump. The solution passes through the membranes and returns to the tank; the membranes are cleaned through the system’s own lines without being removed. When the build-up is cleared before it becomes permanent, it helps the product water flow recover.

02Key Features

Everything Needed for Cleaning on One Frame

The Membrane Cleaning Unit brings the core equipment for chemical cleaning together on a single frame.

Polyethylene Chemical Tank

The cleaning solution is prepared in the polyethylene tank; throughout the clean, the solution returning from the membranes also comes back to this tank.

Stainless Steel Pump

The cleaning pump that delivers the solution from the tank to the membrane housings is of stainless steel construction.

PVC Piping

The lines between the tank, the pump and the system connections are made with plastic PVC pipes.

On/Off Panel

The pump is started and stopped from the electrical panel on the unit; the operator manages the cleaning steps.

SS304 Stainless Frame

The tank, pump and panel are carried as a single unit on an SS304 grade stainless steel frame.

For 4 Inch Systems

It is offered for reverse osmosis systems with 1–15 membranes of 4 × 40 inch that produce 5–75 tonnes of product water a day.

05How It Works

How Does the Membrane Cleaning Unit Work?

The Membrane Cleaning Unit applies the method known in the industry as CIP (clean-in-place). The tank, pump and connection layout of a typical CIP set-up is explained in detail in this technical article on the design of reverse osmosis cleaning set-ups.

  1. The System Is Stopped and Connected

The reverse osmosis system is stopped; the unit’s delivery line is connected to the feed side of the system and its return line to the cleaning tank.

  2. The Cleaning Solution Is Prepared

The polyethylene tank is filled with reverse osmosis product water and a cleaning chemical suited to the type of fouling is added.

  3. Circulated at Low Pressure

The stainless pump passes the solution through the membranes at low pressure; the solution returning from the concentrate and product sides comes back to the tank.

  4. Soaking and Circulation

The solution is left to stand on the membrane surface for a while, then circulated again; the loosened build-up is carried to the tank.

  5. Rinsing and Return to Service

Before switching to a different chemical and at the end of the clean, the system is rinsed with product water; the reverse osmosis system is then returned to normal production.

06Making the Right Choice

Is It Right for Your 4 Inch System?

When choosing the Membrane Cleaning Unit, the membrane diameter, the number of membranes and the type of fouling should be assessed together.

Membrane Diameter

The unit is offered for systems with 4 inch membranes; on systems with 8 inch membranes, the cleaning equipment is selected separately according to the system’s capacity.

Number of Membranes

It is used with systems that have 1 to 15 membranes of 4 × 40 inch and produce 5–75 tonnes of product water a day.

Type of Fouling

Limescale and mineral deposits are removed with an acidic solution, organic and biological fouling with an alkaline one; the chemical is chosen accordingly.

Manual Operation

The unit works from an on/off panel; it has no PLC to run the cleaning steps automatically, and the operator manages the process.

07Maintenance and Use

Cleaning at the Right Time

Used at the right time and with the right chemical, the Membrane Cleaning Unit helps preserve membrane performance.

  • A clean should be planned when the normalised product water flow falls by 10%, or when salt passage rises by 5–10% or the differential pressure by 10–15%.
  • For comparison, the steady operating figures from the first 48–72 hours after the system is commissioned should be kept on record.
  • If cleaning is delayed and the loss of flow grows, it becomes harder to bring the membranes back to their original performance with a standard clean.
  • Between acidic and alkaline cleans, the system should be rinsed thoroughly with product water; otherwise dissolved minerals can precipitate again.
  • The cleaning chemical should be used within the pH and temperature limits allowed by the membrane manufacturer.
  • After cleaning, the tank, pump and piping should be flushed with clean water; no chemical residue should be left in the unit.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Membrane Cleaning Unit do?
Using a chemical solution, it cleans away the limescale, mineral deposits, colloidal particles and organic and biological fouling that build up on reverse osmosis membranes, without removing the membranes. The solution is prepared in the polyethylene tank, passed through the membranes by the stainless pump and returned to the tank.
Which systems is it used with?
It is used with industrial reverse osmosis systems that carry 1 to 15 membranes of 4 × 40 inch and produce 5–75 tonnes of product water a day. On larger systems with 8 inch membranes, the cleaning tank and pump are sized separately to the system’s capacity.
Are the cleaning chemical and the reverse osmosis unit included?
No. The unit consists of a polyethylene tank, a stainless pump, PVC piping and an on/off panel. The cleaning chemical is chosen separately according to the type of fouling on the membrane, and the reverse osmosis unit is a separate product.
When should the membranes be cleaned?
The generally accepted criterion is a 10% fall in normalised product water flow, or a 5–10% rise in salt passage or a 10–15% rise in differential pressure. These figures are tracked by comparing them with the system’s steady operation over its first 48–72 hours.
Does it clean automatically?
No, this is a manual unit. The pump is run from the on/off panel; preparing the solution, the soak times and the rinsing steps are managed by the operator.
Does the Membrane Cleaning Unit come with a warranty?
Yes. The tank, pump and panel of the Membrane Cleaning Unit carry a 2-year warranty. Cleaning chemicals and membranes are consumables, so they are outside the warranty.
