Two-Lamp Treatment at High Flow with the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit is an industrial ultraviolet unit in which two amalgam lamps run inside a 304 grade stainless steel body, with 3 inch flanged connections and a digital panel. With a total power of 660 watts, it treats water with ultraviolet light on lines up to 50 m³ per hour at a 300 J/m² dose, or up to 38 m³ per hour at the higher 400 J/m² dose; by disrupting the structure of microorganisms in the water, it helps reduce the microbiological load.

01Problem & Solution

At High Flow the Lamp Count Climbs Fast

Problem

More Lamps, More Maintenance Points

On lines carrying tens of cubic metres of water an hour, the output per unit length of standard low-pressure UV lamps is limited, so many lamps have to be fitted in the body to reach the required dose. Every lamp means another quartz sleeve and another connection point; lamp changes, sleeve cleaning and fault tracking all add to the workload.

Solution

Two Amalgam Lamps Are Enough

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit uses amalgam lamps, which give a higher ultraviolet output per unit length. Where a UV unit with standard lamps in the same 50 m³/hour flow class runs on ten lamps, this unit makes do with two; the number of lamps, sleeves and maintenance points falls markedly.

02Key Features

Fewer Lamps, High Flow

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit brings together in a single body the UV output, connections and monitoring that high-flow industrial lines need.

Amalgam Lamp Technology

The mercury in the lamp is present as an alloy with a metal such as indium. This low-pressure high-output class of lamp gives a higher ultraviolet output per unit length than a standard lamp.

50 m³/hour Flow

It handles 50 m³ of water an hour at a 300 J/m² dose and 38 m³ an hour at the higher 400 J/m² dose; it suits factory and plant main lines.

3 Inch Flanged Connection

The inlet and outlet are 3 inch flanged; the unit is fitted to high-flow industrial pipework with a bolted joint to a mating flange.

Digital Panel

The panel includes a fault indicator, an electronic operating-hours counter and an audible fault alarm. It also gives a warning when lamp life is up.

304 Stainless Steel Body

The body is 304 grade stainless steel; an AISI 316 body option is also available on request. The unit’s working pressure is 6–8 bar.

Chemical-Free Treatment

It works with ultraviolet light and adds no chemicals to the water; after treatment it leaves no chemical residue in the water.

05How It Works

How Does the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit Work?

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit produces ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 254 nanometres using amalgam lamps, which belong to the low-pressure high-output lamp class. The characteristics of the lamp types and the concept of ultraviolet dose are explained in detail in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ultraviolet guidance manual.

  1. The Water Is Clarified First

Sediment, turbidity, iron and manganese are held back in pre-treatment stages such as a sand filter and cartridge filters. Clear water lets the UV pass through it more easily.

  2. It Enters the Body Through the Flanged Inlet

Water enters the horizontal stainless steel body through the 3 inch flanged inlet and flows around the two amalgam lamps in their quartz sleeves.

  3. The Amalgam Lamps Produce UV Light

The amalgam in the lamp limits the amount of mercury that passes into the vapour phase. The lamps typically run at an operating temperature of 60–100 °C and give a high ultraviolet output per unit length.

  4. The UV Meets the Water

The ultraviolet light disrupts the structure of microorganisms in the water and helps reduce the microbiological load. The water then goes out to the pipework through the 3 inch flanged outlet.

  5. It Is Monitored from the Digital Panel

The panel counts operating hours electronically; in the event of a fault it alerts you with the fault indicator and an audible alarm, and it also gives a warning when lamp life is up.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 50 m³/Hour Right for Your Line?

When choosing the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit, consider line flow rate, target dose, water clarity and installation conditions together.

Line Flow Rate and Dose

Work to 50 m³/hour for a 300 J/m² target and 38 m³/hour for a 400 J/m² target; the line’s highest instantaneous flow rate should not exceed this value.

Water Clarity

Turbidity, iron, manganese and hardness reduce how well the UV passes through the water; a suitable pre-treatment stage must sit ahead of the unit.

Connection and Pressure

The 3 inch flanged inlet and outlet are connected with a mating flange to suit the pipework; line pressure should not exceed the unit’s 6–8 bar working pressure.

Installation and Service Space

Leave clearance to suit the body length so the lamps can be drawn out of the body; prepare a mounting place and a 220 V electrical supply for the panel.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

With regular maintenance the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit keeps its performance at high flow.

  • Lamp life is 9,000 hours, which in continuous operation corresponds to about 375 days. Even if the lamps continue to light, their UV intensity falls, so they must be renewed when their life is up.
  • Keep a regular eye on the fault indicator and operating hours on the digital panel; when the audible fault alarm sounds or a lamp life warning appears, check the lamps.
  • If limescale, iron or manganese builds up on the quartz sleeves the UV cannot reach the water; check and clean the sleeves regularly.
  • Do not run the lamps while the body is empty of water; amalgam lamps running in air can begin to suffer damage within 6–12 hours.
  • Disconnect the unit from the electricity supply and release the pressure in the line while changing lamps or cleaning sleeves.
  • Do not neglect maintenance of the pre-treatment stages; turbidity that gets past the filters reduces how well the UV passes through the water and lowers the unit’s performance.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit do?
It passes clear, filtered water through the ultraviolet light of two amalgam lamps; by disrupting the structure of microorganisms in the water, it helps reduce the microbiological load. It is used on lines up to 50 m³ per hour at a 300 J/m² dose.
How does an amalgam lamp differ from a standard UV lamp?
Both are low-pressure mercury vapour lamps and produce UV at 254 nanometres. In an amalgam lamp the mercury is alloyed with a metal such as indium; the lamp runs at a higher temperature and with higher power per unit length. Fewer lamps are therefore needed for the same dose.
What do 300 J/m² and 400 J/m² mean?
Both values are ultraviolet doses, that is, the UV energy reaching a unit area. The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit delivers a flow rate of 50 m³ per hour at a 300 J/m² dose and 38 m³ per hour at a 400 J/m² dose. Which dose to work to is decided by the application and the water analysis.
Is it enough on its own?
No. This unit does not remove sediment, chlorine, hardness or dissolved salts. Because turbidity, iron and manganese reduce how well the UV passes through the water, suitable pre-treatment stages must sit ahead of it.
When should the lamps be replaced?
Lamp life is 9,000 hours, and the digital panel gives a warning when that time is up. Even if the lamps continue to light, their UV intensity has fallen, so they should be renewed at that point; the quartz sleeves should be cleaned at the same service.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit is covered by a 2-year warranty.
