High Flow on the Main Line with the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/Hour

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour is a high-flow ultraviolet treatment unit with 5 inch flanges, in which four amalgam lamps work together inside a 304 grade stainless steel body. It runs at 100 m³ per hour at a 300 J/m² dose and 75 m³ per hour at a 400 J/m² dose; the four lamps have a combined power of 1,260 watts. It helps reduce the microbiological load without adding chemicals to the water. The digital control panel monitors the lamps with a fault indicator, an electronic hour meter and an audible fault alert, and gives a warning when lamp life is up.

01Problem & Solution

As Flow Rises, Exposure Time Shortens

Problem

Standard Lamps Mean Many Lamps

On main lines, the higher the flow, the less time the water spends under the UV light. Delivering the required dose with standard low-pressure lamps takes a large number of lamps; as the lamp count rises the body grows, the panel gets crowded, and lamp changes and the maintenance load increase.

Solution

Four Amalgam Lamps, 100 m³/Hour

With low-pressure high-output amalgam lamps, the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour produces more ultraviolet light per unit length. It handles a flow of 100 m³ per hour with four lamps; each lamp runs at 315 watts and a single digital panel monitors them all.

02Key Features

High Flow, Few Lamps

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour is designed for industrial main lines carrying 75–100 m³ of water per hour.

4 Amalgam Lamps

High-output amalgam lamps produce more UV light than standard low-pressure lamps, so fewer lamps are needed for the same dose. Total power is 1,260 watts.

100 m³/Hour Flow

At a 300 J/m² dose it runs at 100 m³ per hour. In 400 J/m² applications, where a higher dose is required, the flow rate is 75 m³ per hour.

5 Inch Flanged Connection

The inlet and outlet are 5 inch flanged; the unit is connected by flanges to large-diameter main line and manifold pipework.

304 Stainless Steel Body

The body is 304 grade stainless steel; an AISI 316 body is available as an option. Working pressure is 6–8 bar.

Digital Control Panel

It has a fault indicator, an electronic hour meter and an audible fault alert; the panel gives a warning when lamp life is up.

Chemical-Free Treatment

Ultraviolet light adds no chemicals to the water; it is a physical treatment stage that helps reduce the microbiological load of the water.

05How It Works

How Does the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/Hour Work?

The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour passes the water through the ultraviolet light of four amalgam lamps. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ultraviolet technical guidance manual explains that amalgam lamps belong to the low-pressure high-output class and that the dose is the product of UV intensity and time.

  1. The Water Is Filtered First

Sediment, turbidity, colour, iron and manganese weaken the passage of UV light through the water. The water reaches the unit once it has passed through sand, carbon and, where needed, softening stages and has become clear.

  2. It Enters the Body Through the Flanged Inlet

Water enters the 304 stainless body through the 5 inch flanged inlet and flows around the four amalgam lamps in their quartz sleeves on its way to the outlet flange.

  3. The Amalgam Lamps Produce UV Light

The four lamps run at a combined 1,260 watts. The ultraviolet light disrupts the structure of microorganisms in the water and renders them inactive.

  4. The Dose Is Set by the Flow

The dose the water receives is the product of UV intensity and the time it spends in the body. For 300 J/m² the flow should not exceed 100 m³ per hour, and for 400 J/m² it should not exceed 75 m³ per hour.

  5. It Is Monitored from the Panel

As the water goes on down the line, the digital panel monitors lamp status and operating hours; it signals a fault with the indicator and an audible alert, and gives a warning when lamp life is up.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 100 m³/Hour Right for Your Line?

When choosing the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour model, line flow rate, target dose, water quality and installation conditions should be assessed together.

Line Flow Rate

Peak instantaneous flow should not exceed 100 m³ per hour for a 300 J/m² target, or 75 m³ per hour for a 400 J/m² target; above that, the water does not receive an adequate dose.

Target Dose

The dose the application requires is set at the project stage; the higher the dose, the lower the flow the same unit can handle.

Water Quality

Turbidity, colour, iron, manganese and hardness affect UV transmission and sleeve cleanliness; a water analysis should be carried out before selection.

Installation and Electricity

Service clearance at the ends of the body for lamp changes, wall space for the 50 × 70 cm panel and a 220 V supply should be planned in advance.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

With regular maintenance the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour keeps its design dose and flow rate.

  • Lamp service life is 9,000 hours. Even while a lamp still lights, its UV intensity falls; once this period is up the lamps should be renewed. The panel gives a warning when lamp life is up.
  • If limescale, iron or sediment builds up on the quartz sleeves the UV cannot reach the water; the sleeves should be checked and cleaned regularly.
  • Keep a regular eye on the fault indicator and audible alert on the panel; when a warning comes up, check the lamps and the panel without delay.
  • Maintenance of the pre-treatment stages should not be neglected; cloudy water directly reduces the performance of the ultraviolet stage.
  • While changing lamps or cleaning sleeves, disconnect the unit from the electricity supply and depressurise the body.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour do?
It passes filtered water through the ultraviolet light of four amalgam lamps, helping to reduce the microbiological load. It adds no chemicals to the water and works on high-flow main lines at 100 m³ per hour at a 300 J/m² dose and 75 m³ per hour at a 400 J/m² dose.
How does an amalgam lamp differ from a standard lamp?
Amalgam lamps belong to the low-pressure high-output class and take their name from the solid metal alloy (amalgam) inside the lamp. They produce more ultraviolet light per unit length than standard low-pressure lamps, so fewer lamps are needed for the same dose. In this unit the power per lamp is 315 watts.
What do 300 J/m² and 400 J/m² mean?
Both values show the ultraviolet dose the water receives; 300 J/m² equals 30 mJ/cm² and 400 J/m² equals 40 mJ/cm². For a higher dose the water must stay under the light longer, which is why the unit’s flow rate drops to 75 m³ per hour at 400 J/m². Which dose to work to is decided at the project stage according to the application.
Is it enough on its own?
No. The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour model does not remove sediment, chlorine, hardness or dissolved salts; sand and carbon stages, and where needed softening, must sit ahead of it. Ultraviolet light leaves no lasting effect in the water; if the treated water will stand in a tank for a long time, additional measures should be considered separately.
Does the Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour model work during a power cut?
No. The lamps run on a 220 V 50 Hz supply; during a power cut or a strong voltage fluctuation they can go out, and the water passes through without receiving UV light. At plants where outages are frequent, the electrical infrastructure should be assessed at the project stage.
Can the body material be chosen?
Yes. The standard body is 304 grade stainless steel; an AISI 316 stainless body is available as an option. The choice is made at the quotation stage according to the properties of the water and the needs of the plant.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. The Amalgam UV Water Treatment Unit 100 m³/hour model is covered by a 2-year warranty.
