Reverse Osmosis · 320 L/h · Compact Frame

320 Litres of Treated Water an Hour with the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit

The Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit brings three stages of 20 inch pre-filters, a rotary-type pump, two 4 inch (40×21) reverse osmosis membranes and a 220 V control panel with a mechanical board together on a single carbon steel frame measuring 560 × 380 × 880 mm. Its nominal capacity is 320 litres an hour; over 24 hours of operation this equates to roughly 7.7 tonnes of water. The unit drives water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane, holding back dissolved solids and many inorganic substances and diverting them to the reject line.

01Problem & Solution

Dissolved Salts Pass Through Cartridges

Problem

Limescale, Taste and High Dissolved Solids

Sediment, chlorine, hardness and dissolved salts can all be present together in mains and well water. Cartridge filters hold back sediment and activated carbon holds back chlorine, taste and odour, but the salts dissolved in the water pass through these stages. Water high in dissolved solids shows itself as a difference in taste when making coffee, tea and ice, and as limescale build-up in equipment.

Solution

Separation by Membrane

The Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit pressurises the water coming from the pre-filters with a pump and drives it through a semi-permeable membrane. Dissolved solids and many inorganic substances are held at the membrane and diverted to the reject line; the treated product water is drawn off through a separate line.

02Key Features

Complete Reverse Osmosis on One Frame

The Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit brings every component, from pre-filtration to the control panel, together on the same frame.

Two 4 Inch Membranes

Two 40×21-type reverse osmosis membranes work in the unit; the nominal capacity of 320 litres an hour is delivered by these two membranes.

Three Stages of 20 Inch Pre-Filters

A 5 micron sediment filter, a blended filter containing half polyphosphate and half granular activated carbon (GAC), and a CTO carbon filter prepare the water for the membrane.

Rotary-Type Pump

The pump raises the water coming from the pre-filters to the pressure the membrane needs to work; the working pressure is set with the regulating valve at the pump outlet.

Pressure and Level Protection

A low-pressure switch stops the unit when the feed pressure drops; a float switch with a 5 metre cable manages operation according to the level in the product water tank.

Flow Meters and Pressure Gauge

The product water and reject water flow meters show the flow in the two lines and the pressure gauge shows the working pressure; the balance between product and reject is set with the reject line regulating valve.

Compact Carbon Steel Frame

The powder-coated carbon steel frame measures 560 × 380 × 880 mm; the 220 V control panel with its mechanical board and the solenoid automatic valves are also mounted on this frame.

05How It Works

How Does the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit Work?

In reverse osmosis, water is driven under high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states in its overview of treatment technologies that pre-treatment is often needed to keep the membrane from fouling and clogging. The Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit carries out this process in five steps.

  1. Sediment Filter

The water first passes through a 20 inch, 5 micron sediment filter, where sand, rust and suspended sediment are held back.

  2. Polyphosphate + GAC Filter

In the second stage, granular activated carbon adsorbs chlorine, taste and odour, while the polyphosphate helps limit limescale formation.

  3. CTO Carbon Filter

The CTO carbon filter in the third stage holds back the remaining chlorine, taste and odour, preparing the water for the membrane.

  4. Pump and Membrane

The rotary-type pump pressurises the water; as it passes through the two 4 inch membranes, dissolved substances are held back. The product water leaves through one line, and the reject water carrying the retained substances leaves through a separate line.

  5. Tank and Automatic Control

The product water is collected in a tank. Through the control panel with its mechanical board, the float switch stops and starts the unit according to the tank level, and the low-pressure switch according to the feed pressure; the solenoid valves open and close the line automatically.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 320 Litres an Hour Right for Your Business?

When choosing the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit, daily demand, the raw water analysis, the installation infrastructure and the tank plan should be assessed together.

Daily Water Requirement

A nominal capacity of 320 litres an hour equates to roughly 7.7 tonnes over 24 hours of operation; consumption at peak times is met from the tank.

Raw Water Analysis

Hardness, chlorine, iron and turbidity values determine which pre-treatment units are needed ahead of the unit.

Installation Infrastructure

A 220 V power supply, sufficient feed pressure and a drain line to discharge the reject water must be ready before installation.

Tank Plan

The product water tank is chosen separately; the 5 metre cable of the float switch determines how the tank and the unit are positioned relative to each other.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

The Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit runs steadily when the pre-filters are changed on time and the unit is monitored regularly.

  • The three pre-filter cartridges should be checked regularly and replaced when they become dirty.
  • The carbon cartridges should be renewed before they become saturated; free chlorine damages the membrane and can lead to its early failure.
  • The product water and reject water flow meters should be read regularly; a marked drop in product water flow can point to fouling of the membrane.
  • The working pressure on the pressure gauge should be monitored; the regulating valves at the pump outlet and on the reject line should not be adjusted at random.
  • Check regularly that the float switch moves freely inside the tank and that the reject water drain line is open.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit do?
It combines pre-filtration, a pump, two 4 inch membranes and a control panel on a single frame. After the sediment, polyphosphate + GAC and CTO stages, the water passes through the membrane and dissolved substances are diverted to the reject line. Its nominal capacity is 320 litres an hour.
How much water does it produce a day?
A nominal capacity of 320 litres an hour equates to roughly 7.7 tonnes over 24 hours of operation. Actual output varies with the temperature, pressure and dissolved solids content of the feed water; output falls with cold water.
Are the pre-treatment units included in the price?
No. The unit itself carries only three stages of 20 inch pre-filters. Ahead of the reverse osmosis unit we recommend an Automatic Sand Unit, a Carbon Unit and a Water Softener. The price shown is for the reverse osmosis unit only!
Does the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit need electricity?
Yes. The pump, the solenoid valves and the control panel with its mechanical board run on 220 V. A power connection, a feed line and a drain connection for the reject water must be ready at the installation site.
How is the product water stored?
The product water is collected in a tank. The float switch with its 5 metre cable is placed in the tank and manages the unit’s operation according to the tank level. The tank is not part of the unit’s equipment list; its volume is chosen separately to suit the usage need.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. The body, pump and valves of the Compact Reverse Osmosis Unit are covered by a 2-year warranty. Because filters and membranes are consumables, they are outside warranty cover.
