Pure Water at the Point of Washing with the Mobile Pure Water Unit

The Mobile Pure Water Unit is a portable pure water unit that combines reverse osmosis and mixed-bed resin stages on a wheeled, powder-coated carbon steel frame. Rated at 500 litres an hour, it carries two 4040 reverse osmosis membranes, 10 inch sediment and carbon pre-filters, a pure water module holding 8–10 litres of mixed-bed resin and two conductivity meters. Designed for applications such as solar panel, exterior facade and vehicle washing, the unit is taken to the job site with its 5-metre inlet–outlet hose set and put into service in a short time.

01Problem & Solution

The Quality of the Wash Water Decides the Result

Problem

Minerals Stay on the Surface as It Dries

Mains and well water contain dissolved calcium, magnesium and other salts. When the water dries on panel glass, on a facade or on a vehicle’s surface, these minerals can build up on the surface. One panel manufacturer’s cleaning guide asks for the water to be wiped off the surface when washing with hard water so that limescale does not build up, which adds extra work to every wash.

Solution

Pure Water Produced on Site

The Mobile Pure Water Unit is wheeled to the job site on its frame and treats the water right there. The reverse osmosis membranes separate out most of the dissolved salts, and the mixed-bed resin captures the remaining ions. The same guide states that reverse osmosis water gives the best result in panel washing; the mixed-bed stage treats that water one step further.

02Key Features

Two Treatment Stages, One Wheeled Body

The Mobile Pure Water Unit brings the stages needed for pure water production together in a single wheeled body.

Portable Wheeled Frame

The powder-coated carbon steel frame runs on wheels; the unit moves easily between job sites and is set up on site in a short time.

Two-Stage Pre-Filtration

Ahead of the membranes, the 10 inch 5 micron sediment filter holds back sediment, rust and suspended solids, and the 10 inch carbon filter holds back chlorine and odour.

2 × 4040 Reverse Osmosis Membranes

The two membranes in their 4 inch membrane housings separate the pressurised water from most of its dissolved salts and deliver 500 litres an hour.

Mixed-Bed Pure Water Module

8–10 litres of mixed-bed resin combine cation and anion resins in the same bed; by capturing the ions left at the reverse osmosis outlet, it deionises the water.

Twin Conductivity Meters

The product water conductivity meter and the second meter supplied with the pure water module make it easier to follow purity and resin saturation.

Hose Set and Mechanical Panel

With the 5-metre inlet–outlet hose set, the outlet and drain hoses and the 220 V panel with its mechanical board, the unit is put into service quickly.

05How It Works

How Does the Mobile Pure Water Unit Work?

The Mobile Pure Water Unit uses two treatment principles one after the other: reverse osmosis through a semi-permeable membrane, and ion exchange with resin. How reverse osmosis separates dissolved substances by driving water through semi-permeable membranes under high pressure is also explained in the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) overview of treatment technologies.

  1. Pre-Filtration

From the inlet hose, the feed water first enters the 10 inch 5 micron sediment filter and then the 10 inch carbon filter. Sediment, rust, suspended solids and chlorine are held back before they reach the membranes; the low-pressure switch monitors the inlet pressure.

  2. Pressurisation by the Pump

The rotary-type pump delivers the water to the high-pressure line. Line pressure is read from the pressure gauges, and the line is opened and closed by solenoid automatic valves.

  3. Reverse Osmosis Membranes

As the pressurised water passes through the two 4040 membranes, it is split into product water and reject water; most of the dissolved salts leave with the reject water. The product water and reject water flows are followed on the flow meters, and the conductivity of the product water on the meter.

  4. Final Polishing with Mixed Bed

The reverse osmosis water passes through a bed of 8–10 litres of mixed-bed resin. The cation resin captures positive ions and releases hydrogen ions, and the anion resin captures negative ions and releases hydroxide ions; these two ions combine to form water. The conductivity of the pure water module is followed on the second meter.

  5. Pure Water to the Washing Point

The pure water is fed to the washing equipment through the outlet hose; the reject water is led through a separate drain hose to a suitable drain point.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 500 Litres an Hour Right for Your Job?

When choosing the Mobile Pure Water Unit, the washing volume, feed water, access to power and transport conditions should be weighed together.

Hourly Water Requirement

The unit produces 500 litres of pure water an hour; the amount of water drawn by the washing equipment should be compared with this figure.

Feed Water

With turbid, chlorinated or hard feed water, pre-treatment units protect the membranes and the resin; a water analysis makes the choice clear.

Power and Pressure

The panel runs on 220 V. There must be pressurised water on the inlet line; when the pressure drops, the low-pressure switch cuts in.

Transport and Placement

The unit measures 380 × 605 × 1380 mm; loading onto a vehicle, moving it around the site and the discharge point for the reject water should be planned around this size and the hose length.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Preserve Purity

With regular checks, the Mobile Pure Water Unit produces pure water consistently.

  • Check the sediment and carbon cartridges regularly and replace them once they are dirty.
  • When the conductivity at the pure water outlet rises, the mixed-bed resin is saturated; the resin should be renewed or regenerated.
  • Watch the flow meters and pressure gauges every time the unit is used; a marked drop in product water flow can point to fouling on the membrane surface.
  • Protect the mixed-bed resin and the membranes from drying out and freezing; do not leave the unit outdoors in cold weather.
  • Check the inlet, outlet and drain hoses after every use, and make sure there are no leaks at the connections.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Mobile Pure Water Unit do?
By combining reverse osmosis and mixed-bed resin on a single wheeled frame, it produces pure water at the job site. It has an output of 500 litres an hour and is designed for applications such as solar panel, exterior facade and vehicle washing.
Does the Mobile Pure Water Unit need pre-treatment ahead of it?
Ahead of the reverse osmosis unit we recommend an Automatic Sand Unit, a Carbon Unit and a Water Softener. The 10 inch sediment and carbon cartridges inside the unit provide basic pre-filtration, while the pre-treatment units reduce the load on the membranes and the resin with turbid, chlorinated or hard feed water.
When is the mixed-bed resin renewed?
When the conductivity at the pure water outlet starts to rise, the resin is saturated and should be renewed or regenerated. Resin life depends on the conductivity and ionic load of the feed water and on daily output. Because the reverse osmosis stage removes most of the ionic load beforehand, the resin only has to capture the remaining ions.
What does the conductivity meter show?
Pure water conducts electricity very poorly; the more ions dissolved in the water, the higher the conductivity. As the US Geological Survey (USGS) explanation of conductivity also notes, even a small amount of ions lets water conduct electricity. That is why the reading on the meter is a practical way to monitor the purity of the water and the condition of the resin.
Why is pure water used for washing solar panels?
Mineral-laden water can leave marks and limescale deposits on the surface as it dries. One panel manufacturer’s cleaning guide names reverse osmosis water as the option that gives the best result, and asks for the water to be wiped off the surface when washing with hard water. The Mobile Pure Water Unit produces this water on site.
Does the unit need electricity?
Yes. The pump and automatic valves run through the 220 V panel with its mechanical board; the job site must have a 220 V power supply and pressurised feed water.
Does the Mobile Pure Water Unit come with a warranty?
Yes. The Mobile Pure Water Unit carries a 2-year warranty; consumables such as filter cartridges and mixed-bed resin are outside warranty cover.
