01Problem & Solution

A Dissolved Salt Load at High Flow

Problem

The Load That Gets Past Pre-Treatment

Sand, carbon and softening stages reduce sediment, chlorine and hardness, but the salts dissolved in the water pass through them. High-TDS water can lead to deposits in process equipment, fluctuations in production quality and an extra maintenance load on boiler and cooling circuits. On a site that uses tens of cubic metres of water an hour, managing this load with small units is difficult.

Solution

Membrane Separation on a Single Frame

The 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System passes pre-treated water through semi-permeable membranes under high pressure. Dissolved salts and other dissolved substances are separated out with the concentrate stream; product water quality is followed on the conductivity meter on the panel. The pump, membranes, valves and control panel come on the same frame.

02Key Features

20 Membranes, One Frame

The 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System brings the main components that high-flow reverse osmosis requires together in a single package.

Twenty 8 inch Membranes

The TFC spiral-wound 8 inch membranes work in four FRP pressure vessels; the large membrane area carries the production of 20 m³ of product water an hour.

75% Recovery

Three quarters of the feed water becomes product water and one quarter is discharged as concentrate; at high flow, this ratio keeps the share of reject water limited.

Stainless High-Pressure Pump

An AISI 304 stainless steel vertical centrifugal pump provides the pressure the membranes need; the operating pressure is set with the pressure regulating valve at the pump outlet.

Automatic Valves and Autoflush

Automatic valves with electric actuators and an autoflush system are standard. Low- and high-pressure switches monitor the feed and working pressures.

Real-Time Monitoring

Product water and reject water flow meters, glycerine-filled pressure gauges and a product water conductivity meter with a 0–2,000 µS/cm range give real-time readings of the operating values.

Optional Configurations

The standard frame is ST-37 epoxy-coated carbon steel and the pipework is U-PVC PN16. A PLC panel, a CIP and flushing unit, an SS304 stainless frame and an SS304 high-pressure line can be added as options.

05How It Works

How Does the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System Work?

The 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System is a membrane separation system: water is passed through semi-permeable membranes under high pressure, and the part that cannot pass through the membrane is separated as a concentrate stream carrying the retained substances. This working principle of reverse osmosis is also described in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) overview of treatment technologies.

  1. Pre-Treated Water and the Cartridge Filter

Water that has passed through the sand, carbon and softening stages enters the system and first goes through the FRP-bodied cartridge filter. The cartridge filter protects the membrane surface by holding back fine particles; the low-pressure switch monitors the inlet pressure.

  2. Fed Under High Pressure

The AISI 304 stainless vertical centrifugal pump raises the water pressure to the level the membranes need. The system is designed for a maximum working pressure of 12 bar; the high-pressure switch monitors this side.

  3. 20 Membranes in Four Vessels

The pressurised water passes through the twenty 8 inch spiral-wound membranes in the four FRP vessels. Water molecules pass through the membrane and reach the product water line; most of the dissolved salts stay on the feed side of the membrane.

  4. Product Water and Concentrate Separate

Three quarters of the feed water is separated as product water and the rest as concentrate. The pressure regulating valve on the reject line balances the recovery; the flow meters, pressure gauges and conductivity meter show the values in real time.

  5. Automatic Control and Autoflush

The control panel with its electronic board manages the pump and the valves with electric actuators; the autoflush system flushes the membrane surface automatically. The optional CIP unit carries out chemical cleaning of the membranes with a tank and pump sized for the system.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 20 m³/hour Right for Your Site?

When choosing the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System, the daily requirement, the raw water analysis, the pre-treatment line and the panel options should be assessed together.

Daily and Hourly Requirement

The system produces 20 m³ of product water an hour; the site’s instantaneous draw and the volume of the product water tank are planned around this flow rate.

Raw Water Analysis

The standard design is for TDS up to 2,000 ppm. For water with a higher TDS or different water values, a projection based on a water analysis is required.

The Pre-Treatment Line

The sand, carbon and softening stages ahead of the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System are installed to keep the feed water within its SDI, turbidity and iron limits; antiscalant dosing is planned separately.

Panel and Material Options

An electronic board or PLC-controlled panel, a CIP and flushing unit, an SS304 stainless frame and an SS304 high-pressure line are chosen to suit the need.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

The 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System runs steadily with regular monitoring and timely maintenance.

  • The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the cartridge filter should be monitored; when the difference becomes noticeable, the cartridges should be replaced.
  • On the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System, the product water flow rate, conductivity and pressure readings should be recorded regularly; a fall in product flow or a rise in conductivity can point to build-up on the membrane surface and may call for a membrane clean.
  • The feed water should be checked by periodic water analysis against its TDS, SDI, iron, silica and temperature limits.
  • TFC membranes are sensitive to free chlorine; the carbon stage should be checked regularly, and no free chlorine should remain in the feed water.
  • The antiscalant dosing system is not included in the package; it should be planned separately according to the water analysis, and the chemical level should be monitored.
  • The backwash and regeneration settings of the pre-treatment units should not be neglected; a fault in pre-treatment is passed straight on to the membranes.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System do?
It produces low-conductivity product water by separating most of the dissolved salts in pre-treated water with membranes. With twenty 8 inch membranes in four FRP vessels it delivers 20 m³ of product water an hour; the recovery rate is 75%.
How is the figure of 480 tonnes a day worked out?
The product water flow rate is 20 m³ an hour; over 24 hours of continuous operation, this corresponds to about 480 tonnes. The figure is based on water at 20 °C and a raw water TDS of 2,000 ppm. If the water temperature and raw water quality differ, output changes; the exact figure is set by a projection made from a water analysis.
Does the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System need pre-treatment?
Yes. In the feed water, SDI must be below 5 and turbidity below 1 NTU, iron must not exceed 0.05 ppm and there must be no free chlorine. That is why automatic sand, activated carbon and water softening stages are recommended ahead of the system; antiscalant dosing is planned separately according to the water analysis.
What is included in the price?
The price shown covers the reverse osmosis unit only: the membranes and vessels, the high-pressure pump, the cartridge filter, the automatic valves, the measuring instruments and the control panel with its electronic board. The pre-treatment units and the antiscalant dosing system are not included in the price. A PLC panel, a CIP and flushing unit, a stainless frame and a stainless high-pressure line are priced separately.
How is product water quality monitored?
The product water conductivity meter on the panel shows the real-time value across a 0–2,000 µS/cm range. The product water and reject water flow meters and the glycerine-filled pressure gauges let you follow the balance of flow and pressure on the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System.
Does the system come with a warranty?
Yes. As a unit, the 480 Tonne Industrial Reverse Osmosis System carries a 2-year warranty; the high-pressure pump, valves and control panel are covered. Membranes and cartridge filters are consumables and are therefore outside warranty cover.
