Hold Back Sediment, Wash and Reuse with the 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter

The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter is a mechanical pre-filter cartridge that fits large-diameter 20 inch Big Blue filter housings and is washed and reused once it gets dirty. The mesh screen inside its white plastic cage body holds suspended particles such as sand, rust, silt and sediment on its surface. With its collarless, flat end-capped design and a two-section body joined at a centre band, it protects the filters and equipment behind it from coarse dirt on building inlets and industrial lines.

01Problem & Solution

Sediment Fills the Cartridge Quickly

Problem

Frequent Cartridge Changes, Weakening Flow

In well water and on old mains lines, the sand, rust and silt carried by the water quickly block the pores of single-use cartridges. A blocked cartridge weakens the flow, and every change means a new cartridge and labour. Coarse dirt that is not held at the head of the line reaches the carbon, softening and membrane stages behind it.

Solution

A Washable Big Blue Cartridge

The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter holds coarse dirt on the surface of its mesh screen at the first stage. When it is full it is taken out of the housing and washed with water, and the same cartridge is refitted. Cartridge consumption falls, and the stages behind it are protected from coarse sediment.

02Key Features

Large Diameter, Washable Screen

The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter sets up a pre-filter stage that can be used again and again on high-flow main lines.

Washed and Used Again

Sediment collected on the screen is cleaned off with water and the same cartridge is used again; on sediment-laden lines, spending on consumable cartridges falls.

Large-Diameter Big Blue Body

The Big Blue diameter offers a larger filtration surface than a standard slim cartridge, so water flows more freely on high-flow lines.

Mesh Screen Inside a Cage

The white plastic cage, made of rings and vertical ribs, carries and protects the mesh screen inside; water passes through the gaps in the cage to reach the screen.

Flat End Caps

Both ends of the cartridge have flat caps with no collar, and each cap has a hole in the centre. The O-ring on the end cap helps the cartridge seat leak-tight in place.

Two Sections, Centre Band

The 20 inch length is made up of two cage sections joined at the flat band in the middle; the band brings the two sections together into a single cartridge body.

Protects the Stages Behind It

Because it holds coarse sediment at the front, it helps prevent early blockage of the spun, carbon, softening and reverse osmosis stages behind it.

05How It Works

How Does the 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter Work?

The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter works on the principle of mechanical filtration: water passes through a filtration surface and suspended particles are held on that surface. How sediment filters hold back suspended matter such as sand, silt, loose scale particles and clay, and why on their own they cannot remove dissolved substances, is explained in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s sediment filtration guide.

  1. The Cartridge Is Seated in the Housing

The cartridge is seated upright inside a 20 inch Big Blue filter housing connected in series on the main water line, and the housing is closed.

  2. Water Passes Through the Cage to the Screen

Water arriving from the inlet port fills the space around the cartridge, reaches the mesh screen through the gaps in the plastic cage and moves towards the centre.

  3. Sediment Stays on the Screen

Suspended particles such as sand, rust, silt and sediment are held on the outer surface of the screen; dirt that cannot pass through the screen collects around the cartridge.

  4. Filtered Water Continues Down the Line

Reaching the outlet port through the hollow centre of the cartridge, the water goes on to the plumbing or to the carbon, softening or reverse osmosis stages that follow.

  5. Washed When Full

When the flow weakens noticeably, the cartridge is taken out of the housing and washed with water without damaging the screen, and the same cartridge is fitted back in place.

06Making the Right Choice

Is It the Right Cartridge for Your Housing?

When choosing the 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter, the housing size, end cap design, flow rate and sediment load should be considered together.

Housing Diameter and Length

The housing must be both the large-diameter Big Blue type and 20 inch long; this cartridge will not fit a 10 inch Big Blue housing or slim housings.

End Cap Design

Check whether the ends of the old cartridge in the housing are flat or have a protruding collar, and choose a cartridge with the same end design.

Flow Requirement

On building inlets and production lines where many taps are opened at once, the large-diameter body restricts flow less than a slim cartridge.

Sediment Load

On sandy sources such as well and borehole water, the cartridge fills often; this is where the washable design makes the biggest difference. On clean mains water, the washing interval is longer.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes on Washing It Correctly

The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter keeps performing well with regular, correct washing.

  • Before the housing is opened, close the inlet valve, then open a tap to release the pressure inside the housing.
  • Wash the cartridge under running water; running water through the central hole as well, to rinse the screen from the inside out, helps loosen sediment clinging to the surface.
  • Do not use a stiff brush, a sharp tool or a very high-pressure water jet that could damage the screen.
  • When the flow weakens noticeably, it is time to wash it; on sediment-laden sources such as well water, the washing interval is shorter.
  • When refitting the cartridge, check the O-ring on the end cap and the O-ring of the housing cap, and once the housing is closed, check for leaks.
  • Before the washed cartridge goes back into the housing, check the screen surface for any sand and silt left on it, and clean out particles stuck in the gaps of the cage.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter do?
Fitted into a Big Blue filter housing, it forms the first stage of the main water line. It catches sand, rust, silt and sediment on its mesh screen; when full, it is washed and refitted. Coarse dirt is held at the head of the line before it can reach the cartridges and equipment behind it.
How does it differ from the collared model?
The collared model has a protruding collar on one end that fits into the housing head. The 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter, on the other hand, has flat caps at both ends, each with a hole in the centre. When choosing a cartridge, look at the end design of the old cartridge in the housing.
Does it fit a slim 20 inch housing?
No. The Big Blue cartridge has a larger diameter and does not fit standard slim housings. For those housings, a slim washable cartridge of the same length is used.
How often should it be washed?
There is no fixed interval; it depends on how much sand and sediment the water carries. A visible drop in flow at the taps shows that it is time to wash it. If a clear housing is used, the build-up on the screen surface can also be seen from outside.
Does it remove limescale or chlorine?
No. The screen only catches solid particles suspended in the water; limescale, salts and chlorine dissolved in the water pass through it. Separate stages such as activated carbon and softening should be installed on the line for these.
Clear housing or opaque housing?
In a clear housing, the build-up on the screen surface can be seen from outside, making it easy to keep track of when to wash; this housing should be installed where it is out of direct sunlight. An opaque housing does not let light through, which reduces the risk of algae growing inside the housing; in that case, the time to wash is shown by the drop in flow.
Can the cartridge be used without ever being replaced?
Washing extends the cartridge’s service life, but the screen and cage wear over time. If the screen of the 20 inch Big Blue Washable Filter shows a tear or its cage a crack, or if the flow does not return to normal after washing, the cartridge should be replaced with a new one.
