05How It Works
How Do Sand, Carbon and Softener Vessels Work?
Loading the Media
The vessel is charged with quartz sand, activated carbon or cationic resin according to the unit’s job.
Fitting the Valve
A suitable control valve is fitted to the vessel’s neck, defining the water inlet, outlet and drain paths.
Service (Treatment)
As the water passes through the media bed inside, the vessel safely contains the pressure and the treatment takes place.
Backwash / Regeneration
When the valve moves to the wash cycle the water flows in reverse, and the vessel stands up to the strain of that cycle too.
Renewing the Media
When the media reaches the end of its life the vessel is emptied and recharged, and the same vessel carries on in service.

What Decides the Right Tank
When choosing Sand, Carbon and Softener Vessels, flow rate, media volume and valve compatibility must be assessed correctly.
System Flow Rate
The plant’s hourly flow rate determines the vessel diameter and therefore the surface area of the bed.
Media Volume
The quantity of sand, carbon or resin required is the main criterion determining the vessel’s volume.
Valve Compatibility
The vessel’s neck size and riser tube diameter must suit the valve model to be used.
Floor Space
Vessel height, headroom and the access needed for loading media should all be planned.
07Maintenance and Use
Notes That Extend Its Life
- A vessel must never be operated above the working pressure marked on it; over-pressure strains the body.
- System pressure must be released before the valve is removed; never work on a vessel still under pressure.
- When the media is renewed the riser tube and lower distributors should be checked; a broken distributor lets media escape into the line.
- The floor the vessel stands on must be level and load-bearing; a charged vessel is a considerable weight.

What do Sand, Carbon and Softener Vessels do?
They form the bodies of sand, activated carbon and water softening units. They hold the media bed loaded into them safely under pressure and stand up to backwash and regeneration cycles.
Does a vessel treat water on its own?
No. A vessel is a body; the treatment is done by the media loaded into it. Quartz sand removes sediment, activated carbon chlorine and odour, and cationic resin hardness. The vessel holds that bed under pressure.
Can the same vessel be used in all three units?
The body belongs to the same family and can be used in sand, carbon and softening units. What matters is the vessel size, valve compatibility and the volume of media it will hold.
Does media escape from the vessel?
No. The distributors at the base and the riser tube keep the media inside. If a distributor breaks, however, media can escape into the line, so these parts must be checked whenever the media is renewed.
Which size should be chosen?
Vessel size is determined by the plant’s hourly flow rate and the media volume required. A vessel chosen too small gives inadequate treatment and high pressure loss; getting the size right means knowing the water analysis and the flow rate.
