Four Stages from Sediment to Limescale with the Industrial Water Treatment System

The Industrial Water Treatment System is a four-stage installation in which a multimedia sand unit with a quartz sand and anthracite bed, an activated carbon unit, a Maxi cabinet water softener and a single-lamp 21 watt UV unit run in series on the same line. The sand and carbon stages work in two 1035 vessels of the same size. Its hourly flow rate is 1 tonne and its daily treatment capacity 5–10 tonnes; the system holds back sediment and turbidity, removes chlorine and odour, lowers hardness and reduces microbiological risk.

01Problem & Solution

One Stage Is Not Enough on an Industrial Line

Problem

Sediment, Chlorine, Limescale and Microbiological Risk

Depending on the water source, sand, silt and rust; chlorine and odour; and hardness and a microbiological load can all occur together. Sediment blocks the carbon and resin beds downstream, while limescale wears down the plumbing and heating equipment. No single unit can solve all of these problems together.

Solution

Four Stages in Series

The Industrial Water Treatment System meets each problem with its own stage. The quartz sand and anthracite bed holds back sediment, activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and odour, Maxi cabinet softening lowers hardness, and at the very end the UV unit reduces microbiological risk.

02Key Features

Four Units, One Line

The Industrial Water Treatment System brings four complementary units together in a single installation.

Quartz Sand and Anthracite Bed

The multi-layer bed of the multimedia sand unit holds back sand, silt, rust and suspended solids, protecting the carbon and resin beds downstream.

Activated Carbon in a 1035 Vessel

Granular activated carbon, in a vessel the same size as the sand unit’s, adsorbs chlorine, odour, off-taste and organic matter.

Maxi Cabinet Softening

The resin vessel and salt reservoir sit in a single body; premium cationic resin captures calcium and magnesium ions and stops limescale forming at source.

21 Watt UV Unit

In the single-lamp unit with its 304 stainless body, ultraviolet light disrupts the structure of microorganisms and renders them inactive; the unit works on lines up to 8 bar.

Automatic Operation

The sand and carbon stages backwash themselves; in the softening stage the flow-controlled valve starts regeneration according to water consumption. No constant intervention is needed.

Built to Required Capacity

The standard configuration has an hourly flow rate of 1 tonne and a daily capacity of 5–10 tonnes. Systems are built to the required capacity.

05How It Works

How Does the Industrial Water Treatment System Work?

The Industrial Water Treatment System uses a different process at each stage: mechanical capture in the quartz sand and anthracite bed, adsorption in the carbon, ion exchange in the resin and, at the final stage, ultraviolet light. How granular activated carbon and cation-exchange softening work is also explained in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) overview of treatment technologies.

  1. Pre-Filter and Multimedia Sand

Raw water passes through the cartridge pre-filter at the inlet, enters the multimedia sand unit and travels down through the bed. The anthracite on top holds back coarse particles and the fine-grained quartz sand below holds back smaller suspended solids; cleared of turbidity, the water moves on to the next stage.

  2. Activated Carbon Stage

The water passes through the granular carbon bed in the 1035 vessel. Chlorine, odour and organic matter are adsorbed, so this load is held back before it reaches the softening resin.

  3. Maxi Cabinet Softening

The cationic resin holds back calcium and magnesium ions, releasing sodium in their place and lowering the hardness. When the resin is exhausted it is renewed with brine, and the captured hardness ions go to drain.

  4. 21 Watt UV Stage

The now-clear water passes through the single-lamp 21 watt UV unit, where the light disrupts the structure of microorganisms, renders them inactive and reduces microbiological risk.

  5. It Goes to the Line or the Tank

Having passed through the four stages, the water goes to the plumbing or the storage tank; the sand and carbon stages renew themselves by automatic backwash and the softening stage by regeneration.

06Making the Right Choice

Is 5–10 Tonnes Right for Your Site?

When choosing the Industrial Water Treatment System, the daily requirement, peak flow, the water analysis and the installation conditions should be assessed together.

Daily Water Requirement

The standard configuration is for sites in the 5–10 tonne a day range; for a higher requirement the system is built with a larger capacity.

Peak Flow

The system’s hourly flow rate is 1 tonne; the site’s peak draw-off directly determines the vessel size and the media quantity.

Raw Water Analysis

Turbidity, chlorine, the degree of hardness and the microbiological load determine the media quantities and settings of the stages.

Installation Space

Enough space for the four units, a drain line for the backwash water and access to power should be prepared in advance; the inlet line must provide enough flow and pressure for backwashing.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Keep It Performing

The Industrial Water Treatment System runs steadily when each stage gets its own maintenance.

  • The pre-filter cartridge at the inlet should be checked regularly and replaced when it becomes dirty.
  • On the sand and carbon stages, the backwash period should be set from the contamination load of the water, with a shorter interval where contamination is heavy.
  • The pressure differential between inlet and outlet should be monitored; a marked drop can point to blockage in the bed. The drain line should be kept clear.
  • The activated carbon charge becomes saturated over time; when the smell of chlorine returns, it needs renewing.
  • Check the softener’s salt reservoir regularly; when the salt runs out, regeneration does not happen. Each regeneration uses roughly 1.5–3 kg of salt.
  • A UV lamp loses intensity even while it continues to light and must be renewed periodically; if limescale or sediment builds up on the quartz sleeve the light cannot reach the water, so the sleeve must be cleaned regularly.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Industrial Water Treatment System do?
It brings four units together on one line. The multimedia sand unit with its quartz sand and anthracite bed holds back sediment and turbidity, activated carbon removes chlorine and odour, Maxi cabinet softening lowers hardness, and the 21 watt UV unit reduces microbiological risk. Its hourly flow rate is 1 tonne and its daily capacity 5–10 tonnes.
What is inside the multimedia sand vessel?
The vessel holds a multi-layer bed of quartz sand and anthracite. The coarser, lighter anthracite on top holds back coarse particles, and the fine-grained quartz sand beneath it holds back smaller suspended solids. The bed is cleaned by automatic backwash with water alone, without salt or chemicals.
Why are the stages in this order?
Because coarse sediment quickly blocks the carbon bed and the softening resin, the sand stage comes first in the Industrial Water Treatment System. The carbon holds back chlorine and the organic load ahead of the resin. The UV stage is placed last because it is effective only in clear water.
Is a higher capacity possible?
Yes. In the standard configuration of the Industrial Water Treatment System the hourly flow rate is 1 tonne and the daily capacity 5–10 tonnes. Systems are built to the required capacity; vessel sizes and media quantities are determined by the water analysis and consumption.
Is the water it produces drinkable?
This system raises the quality of the utility water but does not remove dissolved salts. Drinking water calls for a separate reverse osmosis stage.
Does the Industrial Water Treatment System need electricity?
Yes. The automatic control valves and the UV unit run on electricity. Access to power and a drain line to discharge the backwash water must be ready at the installation site.
Does the system come with a warranty?
Yes. The units of the Industrial Water Treatment System (the vessels, valves, water softener and UV unit) carry a 2-year warranty.
