Steady Salt Rejection with the FilmTec 4″ Membrane

The FilmTec 4″ Membrane is a 4040 reverse osmosis element used to treat mains and brackish water. Its thin-film composite (TFC) structure separates out dissolved salts, heavy metals and organic contaminants at a high rate, giving steady flow and long life in mid-scale systems.

01Problem & Solution

Membrane Quality Decides the System’s Fate

Problem

Poor Performance, High Running Costs

With a weak membrane, salt rejection falls away over time, output drops and the system is forced to run at higher pressure. That raises the energy bill and makes the outlet water quality fluctuate.

Solution

Proven TFC Technology

The thin-film composite structure of the FilmTec 4″ Membrane delivers high salt rejection and steady permeate flow at low to medium pressure. The system runs at its design figures and running costs stay predictable.

02Key Features

Efficient, Durable, Standard-Compatible

The FilmTec 4″ Membrane is a dependable treatment element for mid-scale reverse osmosis systems.

High Salt Rejection

In mains and brackish water applications it separates out up to 99% of dissolved salts.

TFC Polyamide Construction

The thin-film composite layer combines high permeability with selective separation.

Standard 4040 Size

Compatible with common 4 inch pressure vessels, so it can be fitted into existing systems.

Low-Energy Options

The low-pressure models in the series support reaching a similar output target on less energy.

Cleanable by CIP

Suitable chemical cleaning procedures allow performance to be recovered.

Modular Installation

Connected in series in multi-element vessels, system capacity can be raised step by step.

04Applications

Where Is It Used?

The FilmTec 4″ Membrane is widely chosen for mid-scale reverse osmosis installations.

  • Commercial RO Systems
  • Hotels & Facilities
  • Pre-Stage for a Pure Water Unit
  • Food & Beverage Processes
  • Boiler Feed Water
  • Greenhouse & Irrigation Systems
  • Membrane Replacement
  • System Integrators

05How It Works

How Does the FilmTec 4″ Membrane Work?

  1. Pre-Treatment Runs First

Sediment, carbon and, where needed, softening stages remove particles and chlorine to protect the membrane.

  2. Pressure Is Applied

The high-pressure pump drives the water onto the membrane surface at a pressure above the osmotic pressure.

  3. Selective Separation

The TFC layer lets water molecules through while dissolved salts, heavy metals and organics stay behind it.

  4. Two Streams Separate

The treated water is taken off through the permeate line and the concentrated reject discharged through a separate line.

  5. Performance Is Monitored

Differential pressure, conductivity and flow are tracked so the membrane’s efficiency is continuously assessed.

06Making the Right Choice

4″ or 8″?

When choosing the FilmTec 4″ Membrane, capacity, feed water and the existing vessel arrangement should be assessed.

System Capacity

A 4″ element suits mid-scale output; high-flow plants call for 8″.

Feed Water Type

This series is used on mains and brackish water; seawater requires the high-pressure series.

The Existing Pressure Vessel

The vessel’s diameter, element count and pressure rating must suit the membrane chosen.

Energy & Recovery

Low-pressure models cut the energy bill, and the target recovery rate shapes the design.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Extend Its Life

With the right pre-treatment and regular monitoring, the FilmTec 4″ Membrane works efficiently for a long time.

  • Chlorine must be removed in pre-treatment; polyamide membranes are sensitive to it.
  • In hard water, scaling should be prevented by softening or antiscalant dosing.
  • When differential pressure or conductivity rises, a CIP chemical clean should be carried out.
  • Once used, the element must not be allowed to dry out; membranes taken out of service should be stored wet.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the FilmTec 4″ Membrane do?
It is the main treating element in a reverse osmosis system. By separating out dissolved salts, heavy metals and organic contaminants from mains and brackish water at a high rate, it produces quality process or drinking water.
Is the brand Filmtec or Filmtech?
The correct spelling is FilmTec; today the brand is made under DuPont as FilmTec™. Filmtech is a common misspelling and refers to the same product.
What does 4040 mean?
It refers to the element’s size: roughly 4 inches in diameter and 40 inches long. 8040 means 8 inches by 40 inches; the two go into different pressure vessels.
Can it be used on seawater?
This series is for mains and brackish water. Seawater involves far higher pressure and salinity, so those applications call for the seawater membrane series.
When should it be replaced?
If, under constant operating conditions, permeate flow drops markedly, conductivity rises or differential pressure climbs, the membrane should be checked; if performance does not return after a CIP, it should be replaced.

Products in stock ship free anywhere in Türkiye and arrive within 1–3 business days. Items not in stock are supplied to order — the lead time is confirmed to you when the order is approved.

Installation and commissioning

Installation is a service · plumbing is the customer’s responsibility

The system is delivered ready to install; it only needs to be connected to the inlet and outlet lines. If valve setup is required, we provide free support over a video call. Installation and commissioning fall under our service work and are subject to a service fee. Plumbing labour and any pipes, valves and fittings are not included in the price; these items are the customer’s responsibility.

Warranty

Consumable

This product is classed as a consumable or spare part; because its life depends on use, it is not covered by warranty. Faulty or incorrectly shipped items are replaced — just get in touch with us.

Withdrawal and returns

Distance sales agreement

The right of withdrawal and the return terms are set out in detail in the distance sales agreement. Systems that have been installed and commissioned, and made-to-order products, are outside its scope.

Cancellation and return terms

How can we help?

Two different requests, two different forms.

The two forms ask different things: if we are building a new system we ask about your water and capacity; if your existing system needs service we ask for its brand and a photo.
