Your Time Clock Valve Back in Operation with the Clack Valve Board 3-Button

The Clack Valve Board 3-Button is the replacement electronic board that acts as the control centre of Clack WS1TC and WS1.25TC time clock control valves. With its 4-digit LCD display, its SET, up (▲) and down (▼) buttons and its button cell holder, it manages the valve’s clock, regeneration schedule and programme; by driving the DC motor, it moves the piston to the backwash, regeneration, rinse and service positions.

01Problem & Solution

Board Failure on a Time Clock Valve

Problem

An Unresponsive Board, a Missed Backwash

Every decision the valve makes comes from the electronic board. When the board fails, the buttons do not respond, the display stays blank even though the power supply is correct, or regeneration does not start; the filter bed is not backwashed and the resin is not renewed. If the display is completely dark, check the mains socket and the 15 V DC adaptor first; if the clock is only flashing, set it again, and if the power cut lasted less than 8 hours, replace the battery.

Solution

A Replacement Board That Fits the Same Slot

The Clack Valve Board 3-Button fits directly into its place on the drive bracket of WS1TC and WS1.25TC valves. After a reset, the valve finds the service position by itself; the control side of the valve is renewed without changing the body, piston, tank or pipework.

02Key Features

Display, Buttons and Memory on One Board

The Clack Valve Board 3-Button brings together on one board the timekeeping, decision-making and motor control functions that a time clock valve needs.

4-Digit LCD Display

The time of day, the days remaining until regeneration and, during regeneration, the active cycle (C1, C2…) and the time remaining can be read together with the status indicators.

Full Programming with 3 Buttons

The SET, ▲ and ▼ buttons are used to set the clock, the regeneration time and the day interval, and to select the programme in the setup menu.

Battery-Backed Clock

A 2032-type 3 V lithium button cell keeps the time for up to 8 hours when the power is cut.

Non-Volatile Memory

The programme and the valve status are stored in EEPROM memory; after a long power cut, only the time of day needs to be set again.

10 Preset Programmes

Choose from six softening programmes, one regenerative filter programme and three backwashing filter programmes (P0–P9).

Flexible Regeneration Schedule

Regeneration starts at the set time, either at an interval of 1–99 days or on the days chosen in a 7-day schedule.

05How It Works

How Does the Clack Valve Board 3-Button Work?

  1. Time and Calendar Are Tracked

The board keeps the time of day and counts the days since the last regeneration; the display shows the time or the days remaining until regeneration.

  2. Regeneration Is Scheduled

When the day interval or the 7-day schedule comes due, the board schedules regeneration for the set time (usually 02:00 at night) and the Regen arrow appears on the display.

  3. The Motor Is Driven

The board powers the DC motor through the 2-pin socket; the motor turns the gears and moves the piston to the backwash, regeneration, rinse and refill positions.

  4. The Piston Position Is Counted

An optical sensor passes pulses from the reflective surface on the gear to the board; by counting these pulses, the board stops the motor at the right point in each cycle.

  5. Return to Service

When the cycles are complete, the piston returns to the service position, the counter resets and the board starts counting towards the next regeneration day.

06Making the Right Choice

Is It Right for Your Valve?

When choosing the Clack Valve Board 3-Button, the valve model, the number of buttons on the board and the programme to be used should be checked together.

Valve Model

The Clack Valve Board 3-Button is for WS1TC and WS1.25TC time clock valves; check the model name on the valve label.

Number of Buttons

Identify the board by its number of buttons: the time clock TC board has three (SET, ▲, ▼), the EI board four, and the CI and CS boards five.

Control Type

The metered WS1 EI valve uses a four-button board (NEXT, ▲, ▼, REGEN); for that, see the Clack Valve Panel 4-Button.

Default Programme

The board appears in the Clack list with the backwashing filter programme P8 as its default; on a water softener, the programme that matches the valve body, piston and injector must be selected from the setup menu.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Protect the Board

The Clack Valve Board 3-Button runs steadily when it is fitted in the right order and kept in a dry place.

  • Before removing the board, unplug the power plug (black cable, 4-pin socket) and then the motor plug; hold the board by its edges only and do not try to separate the display panel from the board.
  • Seat the holes on the lower edge of the new board onto the two plastic pins on the drive bracket, and push the board towards the valve until it sits under the upper latch.
  • After fitting, press SET and ▼ for 3 seconds, or unplug the power plug and plug it back in; the display shows the software version and the valve finds the service position again.
  • If the clock flashes after power cuts shorter than 8 hours, the battery is flat; replace the non-rechargeable battery with a 2032-type 3 V lithium battery, with the positive side facing the right way and fully seated in the holder.
  • The power adaptor is for dry locations only; keep the board and the adaptor away from splashing water, and store spare button cells out of the reach of children.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the Clack Valve Board 3-Button do?
It is the control board of Clack WS1TC and WS1.25TC time clock valves. It keeps the time, works out the regeneration day and drives the motor to move the piston to the wash and service positions.
Are the settings lost in a power cut?
No. The programme and the valve status are kept in non-volatile memory. If the battery is not flat, the clock is kept for up to 8 hours; after longer cuts, only the time of day needs to be set again. If the cut happens during regeneration, regeneration is completed from the point where it stopped once the power returns.
Does it fit metered Clack valves?
No. The Clack Valve Board 3-Button is for time clock TC valves that do not use a water meter. The metered EI board has four buttons and the CI board five, and they appear in the Clack list under separate codes.
If E1, E2 or E3 appears on the display, is the board faulty?
Not always. According to the Clack service manual, E1 shows that motor movement could not be detected, E2 that the motor stopped before reaching the next cycle position, and E3 that the motor ran too long trying to find the position. The board should not be replaced until the motor, gears and piston have been checked.
How do you start a manual regeneration?
When you press and release ▲ and ▼ together, regeneration is scheduled for the set time and the Regen arrow appears on the display; doing the same again cancels the schedule. If you hold both buttons down for 3 seconds, regeneration starts immediately and this request cannot be cancelled.
