01Problem & Solution

A Clogged Bed Means Falling Efficiency

Problem

Manual Backwashing Is Laborious

Sediment builds up in a sand or activated carbon filter bed over time and treatment efficiency falls. Backwashing the bed by hand is laborious, and when it is forgotten performance drops quickly.

Solution

Cleaning on Time, Automatically

The 5600 Timer Filter Valve backwashes the system automatically at the set hour. It flushes what has built up in the filter bed to drain, renewing the bed and keeping efficiency constant.

02Key Features

Automatic, Dependable, Durable

The 5600 Timer Filter Valve is built with a solid mechanical design to automate the maintenance of sand and carbon filtration systems.

Fully Automatic

By backwashing the system automatically at set intervals it removes the need for manual intervention.

System Efficiency

Regular cleaning keeps the efficiency of the sand and carbon media consistently high.

Mechanical Reliability

Its solid mechanical design lets it run steadily, unaffected by electronic faults.

Long-Lasting

With quality components it runs trouble-free for years without needing maintenance.

Time-Controlled Programme

The backwash time is set on the timer dial, so backwashing can be planned for the quietest hours.

1 inch Connection

Its standard 1 inch connection suits industrial and commercial filter vessels.

04Applications

Which Systems Is It Suitable For?

The 5600 Timer Filter Valve suits automatic backwash control on industrial and commercial sand filters and activated carbon systems.

  • Industrial Plants
  • Restaurants
  • Hotels
  • Hospitals
  • Schools
  • Sand Filter Systems
  • Activated Carbon Systems
  • Commercial Treatment Lines

05How It Works

How Does the 5600 Timer Filter Valve Work?

  1. Setting the Time

The timer dial on the valve is set to local time and the backwash programme is chosen.

  2. The Programme Starts

At the set hour the valve starts automatically; it is usually set for the small hours, when water use is lowest.

  3. The Flow Is Reversed

The valve reverses the flow and begins washing the filter bed from the bottom upwards.

  4. The Sediment Is Flushed Out

Sediment and captured matter in the bed go to drain, and the sand and carbon media are cleaned again.

  5. Back to Normal Service

Once backwashing is complete the valve returns to the normal flow position and the system continues with a clean bed.

06Making the Right Choice

What Decides the Right Valve

System Type

The valve is designed for the backwash requirement of sand filters and activated carbon systems.

Connection Diameter

For installation it matters that the 1 inch connection suits your vessel and pipework sizes.

Timer or Metered?

The 5600 backwashes at fixed intervals; if you want backwashing based on actual consumption, consider a metered valve.

Backwash Frequency

Water quality and how heavily the system is used are taken into account when setting the weekly interval.

07Setting Up and Use

Notes on Correct Use

  • Set the timer dial correctly to local time; backwashing is usually programmed for between 02:00 and 03:00.
  • Depending on water quality, one or two backwashes a week is enough for most installations.
  • After a long power cut, check the time setting and reset it if necessary.
  • Its mechanical design lets it run for years without maintenance; all that needs checking regularly is the time setting.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What happens to the 5600 Timer Filter Valve in a power cut?
It is a mechanical–electrical hybrid. The programme is held by a battery, so it does not lose its settings in a short power cut. After a long cut the time may need resetting by hand.
How is the valve’s backwash time set?
The timer dial on the valve is set to your local time. Backwashing is usually programmed for between 02:00 and 03:00, when water use is lowest. One or two backwashes a week is recommended.
What is the difference between the 5600 and a metered valve?
The 5600 backwashes at fixed (timed) intervals. Metered valves measure actual water consumption and backwash only when needed, which saves 20–30% on salt and water. Water Point will recommend the valve that suits your need.
Which systems is it used in?
In industrial and commercial sand filters and activated carbon systems. Industrial plants, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and schools are its typical applications.
Does it need maintenance?
Its solid mechanical design lets it run for years without maintenance. All that needs checking regularly is that the time setting is correct.
