01Problem & Solution

Balancing Efficiency and Energy at Mid Scale

Problem

High Pressure, High Energy

In small and mid-scale RO systems, membranes that need high pressure increase the load on the pump and the energy consumed. Membranes that have reached the end of their life, meanwhile, cost efficiency.

Solution

Efficiency at Ultra Low Pressure

The ULP21 4040 Membrane works efficiently at ultra low pressure and so cuts energy. Separating up to 99% of dissolved salts and contaminants, it produces quality water in mid-scale systems.

02Key Features

Energy-Efficient, Compact, Reliable

The ULP21 4040 Membrane is an energy-efficient, reliable element for mid and small-scale RO systems.

Ultra Low Pressure (ULP)

It works efficiently at very low operating pressure, cutting pump load and energy costs.

Compact 4040 Size

Its 4 inch size makes it a compact solution for mid and small-scale systems.

High Salt Rejection

It separates up to 99% of dissolved salts, heavy metals and contaminants from the water.

TFC Polyamide Construction

A thin-film composite polyamide spiral-wound design gives steady, dependable treatment.

Standard 4040 Compatibility

It fits standard 4 inch membrane vessels and is easily integrated into mid-scale RO systems.

A Wide Range of Uses

Used on surface, tap and municipal water, and in boiler feed water, food and pharmaceutical production.

03Technical Specifications

Membrane Specifications

Feature Value What it does
Size 4040 (4" × 40") The physical size. If a spare does not match this, it will not go into the housing.
Membrane Type TFC Polyamide The structure of the membrane. Chlorine burns it, so a carbon filter in front is essential.
Pressure Rating Ultra Low (ULP)
Salt Rejection Up to 99% How much of the dissolved salt is rejected. A higher figure means purer water.
Feed Water < 1500 ppm The inlet water quality the unit can cope with. Above this limit, pre-treatment is needed.
Operating Scale Mid / Small System
Weight 2 kg Product weight. For wall mounting, the supporting surface is chosen accordingly.
Dimensions 13 × 13 × 90 cm The outer dimensions of the unit. The cabinet or plant room has to be wider than this.

04Applications

Where Is It Used?

The ULP21 4040 Membrane is used in RO systems treating mid and small-scale, low-salinity water.

  • Mid-Scale RO Systems
  • Surface & Tap Water
  • Municipal Water
  • Boiler Feed Water
  • Food & Beverage Production
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
  • Water Demineralisation
  • Membrane Change / Renewal

05How It Works

How Does the ULP21 4040 Membrane Work?

  1. It Is Loaded into the Vessel

The membrane is loaded into the 4 inch vessel and connected to the RO system’s pressure line.

  2. Water Is Fed at Low Pressure

Pre-treated water is delivered to the membrane surface at ultra low pressure, so energy consumption falls.

  3. It Filters Through the Semi-Permeable Film

Only water molecules pass through the polyamide film; dissolved salts, heavy metals and contaminants are held back.

  4. Permeate and Concentrate Separate

The treated water (permeate) is collected, and the salt-concentrated reject washes the membrane surface on its way to drain.

  5. Quality Water Outlet

Low-conductivity, high-purity water is delivered to the system outlet and goes into use.

06Making the Right Choice

What Decides the Right Membrane

When choosing the ULP21 4040 Membrane, the system scale, feed water and size compatibility must be assessed correctly.

System Scale

The 4040 size is for mid and small-scale systems; 8040 membranes are preferred at high capacity.

Feed Water TDS

It is ideal for low salinity below 1500 ppm; seawater calls for a seawater (SWRO) membrane.

Size & Vessel Fit

The 4040 size fits standard 4 inch vessels; the vessel size of the system should be confirmed before installation.

Energy as a Priority

Where low operating pressure and energy saving come first, a ULP membrane is a suitable choice.

07Maintenance and Use

Notes That Extend Its Life

  • The membrane is sensitive to chlorine and oxidants; the chlorine in the feed water must always be removed in pre-treatment (with activated carbon or similar).
  • Where a drop in permeate or a loss of salt rejection is seen, chemical cleaning (CIP) should be carried out.
  • To hold fouling off, the pre-treatment stages — sediment and hardness removal — must be working properly.
  • The membrane must not be left dry; during long shutdowns it should be stored in the preservative solution the manufacturer recommends.

08Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What does the ULP21 4040 Membrane do?
It is a membrane element that treats water at molecular level in reverse osmosis systems. It works efficiently at ultra low pressure and separates up to 99% of dissolved salts and contaminants.
What does ULP (ultra low pressure) mean?
It shows that the membrane works at very low operating pressure. That lets the pump use less energy and cuts running costs, especially on low-salinity water below 1500 ppm.
How does it differ from 8040 membranes?
The 4040 size has a smaller capacity than 8 inch 8040 membranes and is intended for mid and small-scale systems. High-capacity industrial plants prefer membranes in the 8040 size.
Can it be used on seawater?
No. It is designed for low-salinity (below 1500 ppm) surface, tap and municipal water. Seawater requires high-pressure seawater (SWRO) membranes.
What shortens its life?
The biggest risk is chlorine and oxidants; if they are not removed the membrane is permanently damaged. Inadequate pre-treatment and cleaning that is not done on time also reduce performance and life.

Installation and commissioning

Installation is a service · plumbing is the customer’s responsibility

The system is delivered ready to install; it only needs to be connected to the inlet and outlet lines. If valve setup is required, we provide free support over a video call. Installation and commissioning fall under our service work and are subject to a service fee. Plumbing labour and any pipes, valves and fittings are not included in the price; these items are the customer’s responsibility.

Warranty

Consumable

This product is classed as a consumable or spare part; because its life depends on use, it is not covered by warranty. Faulty or incorrectly shipped items are replaced — just get in touch with us.

Withdrawal and returns

Distance sales agreement

The right of withdrawal and the return terms are set out in detail in the distance sales agreement. Systems that have been installed and commissioned, and made-to-order products, are outside its scope.

How can we help?

Two different requests, two different forms.

The two forms ask different things: if we are building a new system we ask about your water and capacity; if your existing system needs service we ask for its brand and a photo.
