Well water is handled with a sequence of stages ordered from a raw water analysis: what comes out first depends on what is actually in the water.
What to measure first
- Hardness (°fH): decides whether softening is needed and how much resin.
- Iron and manganese: the usual cause of orange or black staining, and the reason an oxidation stage may come before filtration.
- Turbidity (NTU) and sand: decides the sediment stage and how often it will be backwashed.
- Conductivity / TDS: decides whether reverse osmosis belongs in the line at all.
- Microbiological load: where present, a UV (ultraviolet) stage is added to reduce microbiological risk.
Why the order of stages matters
Put a softener ahead of an iron filter and the resin fouls within months. Put a UV lamp ahead of a sediment filter and turbidity shadows the water so the lamp does far less than its rating suggests. Put an RO membrane behind unfiltered well water and it blocks. Each stage protects the one after it, and getting the sequence wrong is the most common and most expensive mistake on well supplies.
